INBOX: Remembering Gedaliah Shaffer A”H in an Important Reminder for Purim Safety
Dear Community,
As we approach Purim, I feel compelled to reach out regarding a matter that weighs heavily on my heart. This year marks the 18th yahrzeit of my father, Gedaliah Yirachmiel Ben Michel, which falls on the 17th of Adar. In his memory, I would like to emphasize the crucial importance of safety during this joyous celebration. As many of you will remember, my father was killed by a drunk driver.
I urge everyone to ensure that no one in your circles drives under the influence this Purim or at any time. Regardless of your relationship with the person, if someone intends to drive after consuming alcohol, please take responsibility—either by securing their keys or contacting authorities if necessary. Our community resources, such as Hatzoloh, Shomrim and Shmira, are also available to assist if you feel it’s needed.
My father lost his life to a drunk driver, and it is my sincere hope that no one else in Klal Yisroel has to experience such a tragedy. B”H in our case we were lucky – the driver was a bad man all together. I can’t begin to imagine how terrible it would have been if it was another Yid that killed him.
Attached is a picture from one of his last Purim seudos. He cherished making a l’chaim but was known for his moderation, sharing profound insights of Torah and Chassidus when he did indulge.
Let us come together to celebrate responsibly and in honor of our loved ones.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
May we be Zoche to Moshiach IMMEDIATELY,
Liba Shaffer
