Two Pedestrians Struck in Same Spot this Week

In two separate incidents this week, pedestrians were struck and injured at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Troy Ave. in Crown Heights.

The first incident occurred this past Motzei Shabbos at about 10:30pm. The victim, a young Jewish woman, was struck by a vehicle making a left turn from Troy Ave. onto Eastern Parkway’s westbound lane.

A Shomrim volunteer witnessed the incident and rushed over to help. He called Hatzlah and blocked off the area to prevent bystanders from getting too close. Hatzalah arrived and transported the victim to Kings County Hospital.

Thankfully, the woman did not suffer any life-threatening injuries, and is expected to make a full recovery.

The second incident occurred this morning at around 11:00am. An African-American man was hit in the exact same spot by a car making the same left turn.

The man was transported by EMS to Kings County Hospital. His injuries as well turned out to be non life-threatening.

#1) New York drivers are the pits as far as awareness, safe driving habits and courtesy–ever seen as I have on numerous occasions–people honking women pushing baby strollers walking with the signal because they are delaying their turn onto that street
#2) Too many cars and it takes so long to get anywhere no one can wait

  • Terrible intersection!

Drivers at that intersection are especially impatient and nasty and barely allow pedestrians to cross the street, always racing and trying to cut people off. To its credit, the City during the past year changed the traffic lights to improve things. But what do you do to change driver attitudes? Maybe if they posted traffic cops there to ticket drivers who cut off pedestrians, speed, or otherwise behave badly, that would help. Anybody have any other practical suggestions?
