Video: Late-Night Thief Strikes Again

Two days after trying to force his way into a Montgomery St. home, Crown Heights’ late-night thief was back in action. Surveillance video caught this unidentified middle-aged African-American male stealing a bicycle from inside the 580 Crown St. condos at around 5:00am last Thursday.

Sources told CrownHeights.info that the thief stole a bag of packages from the mail room before returning 20 minutes later for the bike.

Residents of the building filed a police report today, after which they gave us this video for release to the public.

We reiterate once again that this man is extremely dangerous, and vigilance is needed until he is apprehended.

He roams around Crown Heights in the middle of the night trying to break into homes and buildings. He may be armed and/or mentally unstable – since he is not afraid of inhabited houses.

If you see this man, please immediately notify the police or Shomrim.

If someone rings your bell in the middle of the night, and you are not expecting anyone, DO NOT open the door until you ascertain that it is absolutely safe. If not, or if you see any suspicious activity, immediately call 911 or Shomrim at 718 774-3333.

  • No Locks?

Why does it appear that he was able to gain access without having to use any combination lock?

  • hi

he seemed to know where to find the bike so maybe he or his wife cleans in the building

A Major lack of sechel !!!
Why aren’t these security cameras monitored ?
Maintenance money is meant for this type of security feature —
Not should could watch any joe shmoe walk in –?
Real -time monitoring and dispatch of our community watch groups would seem to be common sense !!!!

  • Looks like he knows where he-s going

Seems as though he’s been there and knew what he wanted. Maybe someone can identify him. everyone who lives on the floor should look at the video.

Also, post signs to warn others c”v that everything is on video.

the door was wide open – hello people of crown street condos maybe its time to fire management and put a manager who can keep your building safe –

so many security cameras but no lock – seems funny????

  • 555

We have the same problem @555 Crown Street. Residents leave the front door propped open. They buzz people in without asking who it is – I have to say I’m also guilty of this. Thanks for the reminder to be more careful. G-d forbid he could get into an apartment or meet someone in the lobby or on the stairs and hurt someone.

  • Agree with #8

You have to be an idiot if you think the guy randomly found the bike.

It’s a no-brainer that this guy knew exactly where he was going, as he did not try various doors, he went straight to what he was looking for.

He may have staked out the building earlier.

  • crown street

cleaerly the lock has been broken. its always locked under combination during the daytime.

  • dovid

looks like that he know that the building was open so he came 5;00am so you should be able to see him in normal time in the day coming to look for it on the cameras

look back on the cameras during lest 24h

  • cameras everywhere

maybe the community can start a fund for buying security cameras all over crown heights.

  • CID

The guy was caught thanks the 580 Crown’s surveillance cameras.
    Great work by the police.

  • Confusing Indentity

The story says the thief was an African American. But I am a bit confused about how they know that. Were they able to verify who the thief was in order to know that he was an American and not perhaps a Jamaican or from Haiti or from another Island country around us? There are SO many illegal Immigrants from there AND from Africa. I just don’t understand how we can possibly know that he is American like the article says.
Having said that, how do we know that the person is African like the article says? Are they saying he is African because of the color of his skin? isn’t that a bit racist? There are So many black skinned people that don’t even knwo where Africa is on the map! let alone BEING from there! It is so racist to call someone African just because of the color of the skin! shameful! so, lets call it what it is, a Black skinned person is the thief. That is ALL re truly know. Not if he is American OR if he is African, let alone BOTH!
