Menorah Shines High Over Hurricane Devastation

LONG BEACH, NY — The site of much darkness wrought by Hurricane Sandy, is now much brighter. Rabbi Eli and Beila Goodman, Shluchim to Long Beach, have been able to continue to lead the rebuilding of the Jewish community, despite hundreds of families still displaced from their homes till this very day.

Chanukah celebrations were brought to a new level with over 400 community members thronging to celebrate Chanukah in the City Square.

This video was taken on the 5th night of Chanukah and is symbolic of the community’s determination to rebuild bigger and better despite the great devastation brought by hurricane Sandy. The 6 story high mountain of sand collected from the streets of Long Beach after the hurricane is approximately only 5% of the 3 to 4 million cubic yards of sand necessary to replenish the Long Beach beaches protecting the community.

By climbing this enormous mountain of sand that overshadows the main boulevard that goes through Long Beach and lighting the Menorah to the delight of many motorists passing by and honking their horn, Rabbi Goodman strengthens his community’s resolve to build stronger and safer.
