Guradian Angel Lights Queens Menorah

Curtis Sliwa, a well known talk radio host and founder of the Guradian Angels, participated in the public Menorah lighting organized by the Chabad of Rego Park.

In introducing Sliwa, Rabbi Eli Blokh, Director of Chabad of Rego Park, recognized the many volunteers who, like Sliwa, selflessly volunteered in the aftermath of hurricane sandy. He pointed out that their actions embody the ideal of Chanukah, that individual people can make a difference in the world.

Sliwa organized patrols in Far Rockaway and other areas to prevent looting and ensure the safety of the local residents. Sliwa was honored with lighting the Shamash light which, in the words of Rabbi Blokh, like the public servant, is out of the ‘lime light’ yet stands on the side ready to assist others.

The idea of dedicating the menorah lighting to individuals was a continuation of last year when Mr. and Mrs. Perlman of Ozone Park lit the menorah in memory of their son Richard, who died as a volunteer fireman on 9/11.

Also in attendance were Mrs. Melinda Katz, a former Council woman representing Forest Hills and personal friend of Rabbi Blokh. Katz is running for the Borough President of Queens; Karen Koslowitz, current Council woman representing the area, Toby Ann Stavisky, NY senate.
