Jews of Chernigov Escape for a Night with ‘Purim in Israel’

For the Jews of Chernigov, Ukraine, Purim provided a chance to escape from the war, tension and economic troubles that are engulfing their country. For a night, they were virtually transported to Israel, where they enjoyed an elegant Purim party arranged by the local Shluchim Rabbi Yisroel and Aliza Silberstein.

The crowd really got into the theme, wearing authentic costumes and headgear, taking pictures by the kosel, and dancing away to Israeli and Jewish music.

The gourmet food was prepared by a top Ukrainian chef.

The event featured a performance by Vechaslav Bereznik, an up-and-coming music superstar, who really got the crowd on their feet.

The Megillah was read by Rabbi Yossi Cohen, who came especially from Kfar Chabad, imbuing the event with a real Israeli energy.

For hours, the Jews lingered on, soaking in more of the atmosphere, more Israel and more Purim – until they had enough to take them through the year.
