New Home for Maryland Chabad House

Washington Jewish Week

Chabad of Silver Spring, Maryland will be tearing down its synagogue and replacing it with a larger building within “a matter of months,” said Rabbi Berel Wolvovsky.

The building at the corner of Lamberton Drive and Lovejoy Street in Kemp Mill, which has been the Chabad’s home for eight years, will be totally removed and replaced with a larger house, explained Rabbi Wolvovsky.

“We’ve improvised for many years” and really need a new building to accommodate the 90 to 100 people who attend the shul, he said.

“It made more sense for us to start over” than to restructure the current facility, he added, noting that the final price tag will probably be $1 million.

Work should begin soon. “We have everything lined up, legally, architecturally, structurally,” he said, adding that no variances were required as the new building’s use will be the same as the current one.

He also said that the new building was designed to fit in with the Kemp Mill neighborhood.
