‘Second Bite’ Teams Up with ‘Our Big Kitchen’
Second Bite, an Australian organization which rescues supermarket food that has reached its use by date, has joined Sydney’s Our Big Kitchen, a soup kitchen directed by Chabad Shliach Rabbi Dovid Slavin, in a new initiative to get that food to those who need it.
From J-Wire:
Meals that Matter will distribute meals that include food with ingredients from the supermarkets’ throw-outs processed by Our Big Kitchen.
Our Big Kitchen director Rabbi Dovid Slavin told J-Wire: “Much of the food rescued by Second Byte is difficult to distribute to the needy. What is a family going to do with a case of tomatoes for instance. So we process the bulk into a format through which it can be sub-divided and easily distributed to welcoming recipients.”
The new Meals That Matter was launched by Federal Minister for Communications and local Liberal member Malcolm Turnbull together with State Premier Mike Baird.
Also present at the launch were local State Member and NSW Minister for Family and Community Services Gabrielle Upton, Waverley mayor Sally Betts and local councillors Tony Kay, Leon Goltsman, Miriam Guttman-Jones and Bill Mouroukas.
Rabbi Slavin added: “I would like to pay special tribute to OBK’s general manager Greg Fisher for both the work he has done in being the architect of this project and for to bringing it to fruition.”
Slavin = kidush Hashem
B”H Slavin makes a kidush Hashem in Sydney and all Australia. We certainly could use good press there after all, v’da”l!
