Smolensk Community Dedicates Magnificent Shul

Hundreds of Jews from the Russian city of Smolensk, located barely 40 miles from the town of Lubavitch, gathered to celebrate the dedication of a magnificent new community center “Beis Malkin,” and its new shul, “Beis Menachem.”

The shul is strategically located alongside the historic ‘Kremlin’ (fortress) wall, which dates back four hundred years.

The community center is under the direction of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok and Chana Mondshine, the Shluchim of the city of Smolensk and the surrounding region. Many distinguished officials participated from the local government including the governor of the Smolensk region, Mr. Alaxei Astrovsky, and the mayor of the city, Mr. Nikolei Alashaiv. Rabbi Berel Lazar, the chief Rabbi of Russia, was also in attendance.

The program commenced with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Afterwards the attendees were ushered in to the main sanctuary for the inauguration of the shul. World renowned Chazan Rabbi Shneur Zalman Baumgartem led a Tefila accompanied by the world class musicians: violinist Daniel Ahaviel and Gershon Feurstat on the keyboard. The climax of the event was when the Toras were brought into their new home amidst music, singing, dancing and incredible joy.

Following the indoor ceremony the crowds of people were treated to a full line up of entertainment and a lavish buffet on the lawn of the new community center. Among the performers was the famous Jewish singer and entertainer Yefim Alexsandrav.

The event was graced by the participation of Rabbi Dovid Mondshine, the director of the Leviev fund, as well as many shluchim in surrounding areas. The event was chaired by the spokesman of the Jewish Federation of Russia Rabbi Boruch Gorin. The author Rabbi Yehoshua Mondshine and the Mashpia of Yeshiva Schools of Pittsburgh Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Itkin, the esteemed fathers of the shluchim to the city of Smolensk, came to participate in the historic event. Many family and friends also traveled from abroad.

Throughout the evening Rabbi Mondshine extended his gratitude to the Rebbe and to all those that helped support the building campaign. The building campaign was led by Mr. Yefim Malkim and Mr. Levi Leviev. The Rohr family was also acknowledged for their continuous support. The event was organized by ‘Fleishman Productions’.
