Binghamton University hosted a special event to remember the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The 10th annual Mitzvah Marathon was held outside the University Union, hosted by the Chabad Center for Jewish Student Life and in conjunction with Hillel at Binghamton.

The event is held in remembrance of the victims of 9/11/2001. It is designed to present the campus community with opportunities to do a good deed in memory of those who lost their lives.

“The goals are for leach and every one of us to increase good deeds on this special day to remember those victims. It’s a way to remember them in action so we can mark the memory of those who died,” said Rabbi Aaron Slonim, Executive Director at the Chabad Center, “It becomes more and more important each year that we raise awareness concerning the tragedy.”

This year, people could contribute to charity, make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for the homeless, donate food to the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW), design New Year greeting cards for soldiers and/or get well cards for children in local hospitals and more.

“We have a whole bunch of things that are going on that benefit the world, really good deeds and we’re all thinking about the victims and how to make the world a better place,” said Lucy Schwartz, Major Programs Coordinator for Chabad.

There was also a Red Cross Blood Drive on campus.

“Even though we all still remember exactly where we were when it happened, we are younger than the people that were five or six years ago. It doesn’t touch us as closely as the students who came before us on the first and second anniversaries. It’s really important to have on-going campus activities to remember this event,” said Samantha Greenstein, Student President of Chabad.

Those who participated in the marathon filled out a form documenting their efforts. It was attached to a picture of a September 11, 2001 victim and placed along a memorial wall.

The College Republicans also read the names of all of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Flags for all victims were placed in the Peace Quad.

Flowers were also placed in the Memorial Courtyard by the monument honoring the 13 Binghamton University alumni who were tragically lost on September 11, 2001.
