Hundreds of supporters – most of whom were backpackers themselves at one time or another – gathered at the Diamond Theater in Ramat Gan, Israel, to pay tribute to the Kathmandu Chabad House that has provided a home away from home for the thousands of Jewish travelers who annually make their way through the Himalayan Mountains.

Special guest Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice-chairman of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch, the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch, spoke to the crowd about what he called the “most cut-off and most-popular Chabad House,” detailing his close relationship with Chabad-Lubavitch of Nepal directors Rabbi Chezky and Chani Lifshitz and congratulating them on maintaining a base of Jewish education in so remote a location.

The Aug. 13 evening was dedicated to Mr. Sami Rohr, the successful businessman and philanthropist who passed away earlier this month and was one of the biggest supporters of Chabad-Lubavitch of Nepal. Both Kotlarsky and Lifshitz spoke about Rohr and his contributions to the center, which has welcomed thousands of Israeli backpackers and other Jewish tourists since it opened more than 13 years ago.

I guess they don’t have to worry about alternate side of the street parking…or getting ticketed for not breaking their boxes down on recycling day…or getting mugged on the way to Shul…
