Historic Chanukah on Island of Tasmania

Chabad of Tasmania, Australia’s Island State, hosted two public Menorah lightings this year.

For the first time ever, there was a public Menorah lighting outside the oldest Shul in the Southern Hemisphere – in Hobart, and outside the second oldest Shul – in Launceston.

With over 100 in attendance, the lighting in Launceston included doughnuts, music, dancing and a raffle. The lighting was attended by the city’s mayor, Albert Van Zetten, and other local dignitaries.

A children’s carnival preceded the lighting, run by Shaindel Gordon and Yaffa Travitz, who flew in from Melbourne. The children had a fun-filled couple of hours with games, crafts, face painting and more.
