Heavy Rains Damage Miami Chabad House

Mother Nature’s wrath over the past two days has left heavy damage at a South Florida synagogue.

Relentless rain is to blame for three gaping holes in the ceiling of Chabad of Miami Beach located at 669 North Lincoln Lane. “We’re going to have a problem because there is major damage in our synagogue,” said Rabbi Zev Katz. “I’m very disappointed.”

Rabbi Katz said he received a call Friday morning informing him of the extent of the damage. “My assistant rabbis were calling me to tell me it’s devastating what’s going on,” said Katz. “They can’t stop the water from coming, and no matter how many instruments we put to stop the water, it just keeps on coming and flooding the synagogue.”

Miami Beach was pounded with heavy rain for the last two days causing massive flooding. “People told us that our roof was good, and it could last for many, many more years, but this rain for the past week-and-a-half, nonstop just really devastated us,” said Katz.

The rabbi added they have not been able to bring in roofers to repair the damage because the rainfall has not ceded.

Rabbi Katz said more than 100 people attend their Friday night services, and he said the service will go on. “We’re not going to stop and cry, but we’re going to stand proud and strong,” he said.
