Russia’s Pacific Port Marks Victory Day

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia [CHI] — As occurred across Russia, May 9th was celebrated in the far east port city of Vladivostok. This is a national holiday – otherwise known as V-Day – which pays tribute to war veterans and honors the victims of both World Wars, including both civilians and soldiers. The Jewish community of Vladivostok – a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia – held a gathering for its elders on this occasion.

The event was met with a healthy turnout of more than 60 people. This is a necessary part of the community’s attention and appreciation for these veterans. Among them were 47 senior citizens who benefit from monthly care packages containing kosher food products.

Community President Gregory Klebanov gave the opening speech to thank the veterans. “We will never forget the great sacrifice you have made for this country and for our people,” he expressed. His words were echoed by other lay leaders and guests. Veterans, including both those who were in battle and those who served on the home front, spoke about their experiences and shared some memories of those difficult times.

Chief Rabbi of Vladivostok and the Primorsky Region Yisroel Silberstein, who is also a Chabad Lubavitch emissary to the region, also led a memorial service in memory of Holocaust victims. He recited Kaddish in front of the Torah, after which six candles were lit and participants paid a moment of silence in memory of the six million Jews who perished in the war. There was not a dry eye in the crowd . The gathering culminated in a delicious three-course kosher meal.
