PSA: Fruit Wine Is Not Kosher for Passover

A reader has brought to our attention that a fruit-infused wine under the brand name Casato, which they had purchased for use over Yomtov, is in fact not Kosher L’Pesach.

While many assume that all wine with a Hechsher is Kosher for Passover, this is not in fact the case, as this particular brand states clearly on the back label next to the Hechsher that it is for year-round use only.

This oversight by the consumer was brought to our attention in an effort to prevent others who may have purchased the wine from making the same error.

Actually that doesn’t mean that it isn’t fit for use on pesach. What it means is that the hashgacha doesn’t make a special run for pesach. Meaning that they won’t guarantee that it is Kosher for pesach. Many times you will find on one item two different hashgachos. One that includes pesach and one that doesn’t.

Please don’t write things that sound silly

And one hechsher ssys only for year round. So your comment is Nada.

as this type of product needs pesach certification it indeed is not fit to use for Pesach. you might want to say that it possibly may be pesach conforming, meaning that someone who used it may not have been oiver c”v chometz, or gebroks.

many flavoring and food infusions use alcohol in the processing or production, so yes, there can be a problem with real chomets, though we don’t know in this case, it’s possible. The food industry is dynamic, and assumptions vald last year (or month) may have changed today. The only answer beyond making everything ourselves all year long is to check every item for the hecher when we take it off the shelves to see if there has been a change. Masgichim can only testify to the sy
tatus of a product, they don’t produce or
control any product beyond the kashrus of it. BTW I’ve seen(relatively)plenty of kosher wines over the last few years that arren’t valid for Pesach, and the same goes for cheese, which used to be kosher for Pesach all year long. Check the hecher always. Also, just as an aside, Ferra Pan candies have undergone some production changes, and some varieties have lost their kosher status. CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!!!!! EVERY TIME
