A reader sent us this photo of a container of parsley for sale in an Israeli supermarket. Just to be clear, the parsley is very, very Kosher.

  • you dont understand

the hechsherim are for 2 things
    1. no bugs
    2. no tevel or shviis

the more hechsherim more people will buy it. at least in israel thats the case

  • dont be misled

a lot of hechsherim doesn’t make it more kosher. In fact it means kashrus agencies are relying on each other, which means more possibility of miscommunication and things falling through the cracks.

#4, who told you that they are relying on each other?

Why the big surprise? Everyone wants a hechsher they can trust, and not everyone trusts the same ones. I wouldn’t trust Sheretz Yisroel to tell me that something is kosher; to me it’s like not having any hechsher at all. And yet there are thousands of naive people who trust it, so manufacturers have to pay it for a hechsher if they want to reach those consumers.

My father once called Doll, and asked them their process of cleaning their vegetables, they explained a very very long process of measures they take to make sure it’s properly cleaned.
He then called Bodek (the Jewish company) and asked them their process and TRUST ME it was not as good!!!

The Jewish writing on the bags is the biggest scam since Obamacare.

#6, We do not pay for the hechsherim. They come out of the marketing budget, and the company pays because the cost is less than the profit they bring in.

#9, Dole’s procedure is not halachically sufficient; Bodek’s and Pos-Tiv’s are. In particular, Pos-Tiv and the Israeli “Gush-Katif-style” growers start with greens that have a low probability of infestation, whereas Dole starts with greens that have a *high* probability. Pos-Tiv in particular does not do any special cleaning; instead they test each batch and if there is any infestation found they dump the entire batch. Dole does not do anything like that, and indeed doesn’t *care* if there are bugs, so long as they’re clean!

  • Parsley Bodek Inc.

This parley has had seven mashgichim tmidim/Shomrim from 30 days before it was planted. They didn’t even take off time for Shabbos. They shooed away every single fly and bug, so that there was never even a chsash of flies or bugs in the parsley. Of course then after picking until packing all seven mashgichim checked each leaf again and again. What’s not known to all is that even after you bring the parsley home, there’s a number you can call, and one more mashgiach will come to your house to check each leaf to make sure no bugs or flies got into the leaves since the time the product left the store and it got to your house. Of course, the truly cautious still won’t eat this parsley. This is only for people who aren’t so makpid.

  • Kashrus is no joke

Shmita is a huge issue in egrets yisroel . As far as I remember from last time the badatz take of the hechsher during shmita because they is heter mechira so they get as many hechshrim that also use heter mechira . Kaj is not a good hechsher neither is London bais din . Don’t know the rest .

  • NoYechi770InJerusalem

    # 13 you have no idea what you are talking about KAJ/Breuer’s is accepted by most frum people & London Bais Din is as as good as OU,OK,NK or Chof K.
Also FYI there is more than one Badatz here ie Badatz Bais Yosef,Badatz Aida HaChareidis,Badatz Machzikai HaDas Belz,Badatz Vaad Rabbonei Chabad, etc.
Badatz Bais Yosef allows heter mechira.
Shmita is a problem & some rely on heter mechia & some don’t.

#13, What are you talking about? KAJ is one of the best hechsherim. LBD is also decent. And no, they do not rely on heter mechira.

I hope whoever posted this photo isn’t responsible for checking for bugs in their own food as they don’t seem to yunderstand the halocha!

  • What is Millhouse talking about???

Millhouse wrote: “Pos-Tiv and the Israeli “Gush-Katif-style” growers start with greens that have a low probability of infestation, whereas Dole starts with greens that have a *high* probability.”

Huh??? Do they use a different type of parsley??? It is not grown in green houses. It is the SAME species of greens. So what type of marketing myth is this?

I heard broccoli or cauliflower is “claimed” to be only YOUNG plants that have less likelihood of infestation, but parsley and other greens are FULL GROWN!

Also, some companies “claim” doing some magic cleaning process, but that would not apply to greens or parsley!

Funny thing is they STILL tell you you MUST wash it – I guess they realize that the product might still have bugs!

  • Smiling

    Yep!
That’s Israel for you. You get the same wrapper with some of the hechshairim missing!
Only in Israel! As we say!

  • Avraham Yosef Follick

Alei Katif plants ARE grown in greenhouses protected as best as possible from bugs getting in in the first place. That’s the whole point of their product line.
