Picture of the Day: Crown Heights Parking

In a neighborhood with more cars than parking spots, the difficulty of finding a place to leave one’s vehicle can be really frustrating to many Crown Heights motorists.

A CrownHeights.info reader sent us this photo of one such motorist, who decided to create a parking spot where none seems to have existed.

What do you think: Is this form of parking justified?

First thing to ask: were the cars in front and behind properly parked, or were they carelessly taking up two spaces each?

  • Life-long New Yorker

I drive the same car; I thought it was mine until I realized that it’s my other hubcap that’s broken.
I take special pride in being able to squeeze into a spot only a half-centimeter longer than my Honda Civic…

  • Not justified.

If a spot looks “iffy”, I pass on it and look for another. You will cause damage to the cars in front and back, and of course, damage to your own car.

maybe both cars boxed this guy in…if this guy fit in…please give us lessons how its done. this happens to me every night…there is always a space that’s tight because some guy decided he needs extra room for no reason.

this issue really affects the quality of life of homeowners and apartment dwellers. it is just intolerable. How does a hard working person come home at the end of a long work-day and have to look sometimes for 1/2 hour ….sometimes more, sometimes less. Its awful and really its a drain on everyone. We really need some options!!

I don’t think this way of parking is normal. I also don’t find it right for people to take up two parking spots. I learned living here two things: your bumper will get ruined and alternate side is in effect everyday besides wed. (Unless you live on EP).

  • In the know

    Outer cars were there first.
At one point a small car was in the middle

  • Doubly Punished

I live on Eastern Parkway (alternate side of street parking six days a week) and work in Boro Park.
After 120, I’ll have no more sins to atone for.

  • if you want to make some money

Set up a parking lot in ch and rent out spaces for a flat monthly fee, and hour by hour. you will get a lot of customers

A bigger problem with parking are the school buses from some of the school that use the little parking we have.
Some of these schools are not even in our neighborhood!

  • parking-what a pain

I have seen cars parked with so much space between them that I get so frustrated.
The City took away so many parking spots on all the corners. Now we are squezzed even more.
How did the community council allow that to happen.
Either we start driving toy cars or drivers should park CLOSER to the vehicle in front.

Yes these busses aren’t from our neighborhood BUT the drivers are Lubavitch . They went to BP to have parnasa as a Bus driver.

    Thank you Shmerel A

PSA. The white car parked last!
The picture doesn’t show u the fire hydrant he was worried about……

    • Wrong

      Actually.
There was another car that also came and parked in front of the white car, before the pump. so the white car had plenty of space before the pump .
White car actually parked BEFORE all the others, on a practically empty stretch of road.

    • a neighbor

      actually
the white car was there in the afternoon and there was space for a car in front, and when he came in the morning it was the black car that pushed him forward to car car in front that he was still not able to get out (w/o scratching his car) so he had the gold car move so the black car will role back so he has room to get out.
      that is what happened.

Make a few streets in CH like President in between Utica and Rochester, where they park on a slant (not on Union St!!). Allows many more cars to park.

I drove around for two hours from midnight Sunday to two am Monday trying to park around Balfour, lefferts, empire…. Frustrated I just parked on the corner by a stop sign and said ” oh well if I get a ticket I’ll deal with it”…. Unbelievably frustrating.

    The issue is
First our schools that park on the streets (excluding OT, BR, ULY, BM), when there is an issue with people parking their own cars these commercial vehicles should be parked on private or rented spots.
It’s simply sickening to have to search for parking for hours when these big vehicles are parked on the streets
Second, regardless of who is parking / driving these out of the neighborhood buses, there’s an issue with our own mosdos doing it, bringing outside buses makes it that much worse. לא באתי אלא להאיר !

this is too funny. although a reality. laughing my head off. interested in lessons how to do that. does the driver of the car want to demonstrate?

  • .white car

there are 2 trees and a light pole in front of the white car all before the pump. So he did not have to worry about the pump when he parked. The gold car and white car were parked there 1st with a smaller car between them and somehow the black car squeezed in between them.

  • President and Rochester

Why can’t we have 90 degree vertical paring like president street? That would triple our available parking spots in the neighborhood!

  • cher

generally with all the headaches involved in owning a car i just walk wherever i have to go or take the city bus and/or subway if i have to travel out of crown heights.true owning a car will get me there quicker but with all the headaches involved in owning a car it just doesnt pay for me to own a car.

a 30 day unlimited ride metrocard is alot cheaper than all the expenses involved in owning a car.

    just a piece of advice

There are just too many cars in the neighborhood–just ban them

  • maybe

Having yellow markings for exact spaces to fit average cars may have some benefit. The first car to park after alternate side has no way to know how many spots are being taken up when picking random place.

Also parking at an angle-parallel- would help on wide streets.

And maybe someone that can do something about it will realize this is an issue…
