NYPD Finds Exciting New Way to Fill End-of-Month Ticket Quotas…

Gothamist

It’s the end of the month, which means it’s time for the NYPD to get cracking on filling those ticket quotas which have been lying around all month.

A reader wrote to Gothamist.com that cops have been pulling over cars on the Williamsburg Bridge for the past two days to give tickets to people with tinted windshields.

Read his account below:

Cops set up a blockade yesterday evening and this morning waving over every car with tinted windows. They’ll ask you to roll up your front window half way and stick a meter on it.

In NYS front window can only be tinted to 70%, which is almost nothing. The stock tints on SUVs and minivans is around 20%. If you have that on the front windows you’ll get a ticket. My car came with tints, passed inspection and I got the ticket. Looked it up online and there’s no getting out of it. In some cases they give tickets for every window – so be nice, but I think those back window tickets may be legal. I have rear tints too but they said “we wont ticket you for those” cuz I we’re being nice.

Either way if you have tinted windows avoid the W-burg bridge.

They use the tint-o-meter. It’s not a standard ticket but you have to send a copy of a receipt showing it’s been removed within 10 days or you pay a huge fine. I think $90 per window plus $50 “surcharge” per ticket. I got 1 ticket for 2 windows, but I’ve heard some people getting a separate ticket for each one.

I’m taking the Manhattan Bridge home today. I think TLC is exempt from this.

  • Where anything goes

If you are a cop approaching a pulled over car with black windows you would understand why.

That is why cops approach on bothsides with hands on guns 1/2 out.

Tinted windows should be against the law period. They are probably protected by the auto glass shops lobby in Albany where anything goes if it means more money in their pockets.

Oh the joys of living in New York
And, they wonder about crime in the city–where are all the police–writting tickets of course for the city because Bloomberg cries poverty

The glass must allow 70% of light to pass through. There is no way that stock glass is tinted to allow 20%. If the glass was that dark you wouldn’t be able to see out at night. Back windows of vehicles registered as a suburban(suv) can have darker glass. Each piece of glass is a seperate violation and you can get a ticket for each violation.

If you are cited for illegal window tints I recommend having them removed by an auto glass shop immediately and request a hearing. Often times the traffic court judge will set the penalty for the plea fine minimum which is $5 plus the state mandated surcharge.

  • TO #1

come on, give me a break! My car has tinted windows, and what it does for me is it keeps the sun from roasting me while I drive, and keeps my car cooler as well. Let the police concentrate on realistically protecting its citizens, instead of turning a blind eye and deaf ear to anything but what can give them a safe ticket. That my friend #1 is the only reason the police are doing this. When something happens that affects you and me such as your car being broken into, or you being mugged or attacked there’s isn’t a cop around to save your life. but if your meter is 2 seconds expired they’ll be there faster than you can blink slapping a ticket on your car! this is just another excuse to be able to meet their quota.
