Bloomberg Pushes for Crossover Mirrors on Large Trucks After Williamsburg Child Death

Mayor Bloomberg announced legislation to require crossover mirrors on large trucks to eliminate blind spots.

The push for so-called “crossover” mirrors to compensate for blind spots in large trucks is taking on added urgency after last week’s death of a 4-year-old who was hit by a truck while riding his tricycle in Williamsburg.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke about the legislation at a Bayridge intersection where a van struck a mother and daughter in 1994.

“We need the state legislature to act and we need them to do it now before another precious life is cut short,” said Bloomberg.

Bloomberg explained that a crossover mirror allows the driver to see anyone at least three feet tall who passes at least one foot in front of the vehicle.

The legislation would require all trucks, tractors and tractor-trailers or semi-trailer registered in New York State to be equipped with crossover mirrors.

Brooklyn state senator Marty Goldman says the trucking industry has been fighting the proposal for years. He says the mirrors cost about $45 each.

  • Don-t Like Trucks

What about all the out of state trucks that rumble and roar down out streets? won’t they be exempt? I suppose big trucks are a necessity, but there REALLY isn’t any room for them in our congested, pedestrian-filled streets here…
