NEW YORK, NY — The NYPD this week plans to crack down on motorists who use cellphones while driving.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, there will be stepped-up enforcement, and more cops will be assigned to catch people chatting behind the wheel.

Violators face a fine of $120, police said.

In 2001, New York became the first state in the country to ban cellphones while driving. Last year, the NYPD issued 195,579 summonses to drivers using hand-held cellphones.

How stupid. just another way to make money. I see people eating and drinking while driving, and/or talking to occupants in the vehicle. Now trust me, managing a hot cup of coffee with a doughnut while driving to work is much more distractive snd dangerous than talking on the phone. If they were really concerned about “talking,” they would ban people from driving with passengers, or at least communicating with them while driving.

    Please.

p.s. anyone here ever see police on the phone while driving? I have. many MANY times. just food for thought.

I hope this isn’t a Purim spiel. I was once caught driving & talking on my cell & I paid the hefty fine, albeit reluctantly. But the interesting thing is, now I can spot cell phone drivers before I see the cells in their hands. They’re all over the road or they’re driving at 10 mph. Both are extremely dangerous & I didn’t realise how stupid I was to try to drive & chat.

Too many people still do it. If you get caught, I have no sympathy for you. This is one of the few recent laws that actually make sense.
