It is with profound grief and sadness that we announce the passing of the veteran "mashpia" and the oldest chosid today Rabbi Yehoshua Korf obm.

Rabbi Korf was born in 1905 to his father Reb Gedalia Korf(Charitonov) a prominent Chabad chosid in Nikoliev (Reb Gedalia was the brother of the famed musicians Reb Aaron and Sholom Charitonov) and to his mother Batsheva obm.

He studied in the Chabad underground yeshivos under in the former Soviet Union. He was one of the "chozrim" by the Previous Rebbe.

During WWI he lived in Charkov where his sons daughter was born. With the outbreak of WWII he fled to Samarkand, Buchara and joined the large group of Lubavitcher chssidim there.

Together with his brother-in-law the mashpia Rabbi Mendel Futerfas obm (he married Rabbi Korf’s wife’s sister) and other chassidim there he opened a Talmud Torah.

After the war he left Russia and came to the U.S. in 1953. He served as a mentor and teacher of chassidus to many of the Temimim and Anash.

Later he opened a Matza Bakery in the lower east side of Manahattan that was run according to the highest standards of Lubavitcher "hidurim." The Rebbe’s personal matzos as wel las those he sent to communities via shluchim all over the world were baked in Rabbi Korf’s bakery. Later, when he was unable to run it he sold it to the owners who run it now in Crown heights on Albany Ave.

Rabbi Korf is known for his monumental book "Likutei Biurim B’Sefer Hatanya," that he wrote in conjunction with the Rebbe’s encouragement and instructions. The Rebbe mentions his book in footnotes numerous times.

When the Rebbe came out asking that "mashpiim" be appointed in all Chabad communities, Rabbi Korf was one of the three mashpiim that were appointed in Crown Heigths. The other two were Rabbo Avrohom Deizin and Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Roitblat.

The Rebbe would also ask him to daven at the Amud on Yud Gimmel Iyar, the yahrzeit of his brother Reb Yisrael Aryeh Leib obm.

He is survived by his sons: Reb Gedalia Korf in Crown Heights, the head shliach in Florida, Rabbi Avrohom Korf, the Mashpia Rabbi Pinny Korf in Crown Heights, his daughter the shlucha in Detroit, Mrs. Batsheva Shemtov as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
