Boruch Dayan Ha’emes: R’ Yehudah Abitbol, OBM

With sadness we inform you of the passing of Chacham R’ Yehudah Abitbol, OBM, who passed away earlier this week at his home in Casablanca, Morocco, and was brought to burial this morning at Har Hamenchos in Jerusalem.

Chacham Abitbol was the true symbol of Torah and Mitzvos, and a Baal Chesed extraordinaire, while also being a successful businessman.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Chana Abitbol, and his children: Rav Avrohom (Morocco), R’ Yaacov (Morocco), Dr. Sarah Avtzon (Crown Heights), R’ Yitzchok (NY), Gad (NY), Aaron (NY), Rav Yosef (Kfar Maimon, Israel) Mrs. Rivkah Biton (Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel), Mrs. Leah Levy (Ramat Bet Shemesh, Israel), R’ Yissachar (Talpiot, Israel) and Mrs. Rachel Sahn (Jerusalem), as well as many grandchildren ka”h.

His son-in-law, Reb Lazer Avtzon of Crown Heights, told CrownHeights.info that Chacham Abitbol actually once served as the Governor of the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, where he instituted a law, happily abided by the entire city during his tenure, forbidding any Jewish or Muslim company from operating on Shabbos.

He is remembered as well for his special devotion to Jewish widows and orphans, sending Jewish children from small villages to learn in Jewish schools in the larger cities, and for an open and hospitable home, where all Talmidei Chachamim from Morocco, Israel and around the world would came to pay their respects and speak in Torah.
