Montreal Elects First Jewish Mayor

Michael Applebaum was officially sworn in as Montreal’s 42nd mayor on Nov 19, 2012 in front of a packed crowd at Montreal city hall that included proud family members, friends, city council members and opposition leaders.

Michael is the first Jewish mayor of Montreal, as well as the first Anglophone to hold the office since 1912.

Every year on Chanukah, he would light public Menorahs at Lubavitch events as Mayor of the borough of Cote des neiges/ NDG. Rabbi David Cohen, Shliach in Montreal and coordinator of the public Menorah lighting at city hall, described Michael as “a man with strong values, integrity and transparency.”

The Jewish community of Montreal is looking forward to the public lighting of the Menorah this year by the mayor of Montreal – Michael Applebaum.
