Modesty Rewarded by Manhattan Vendor
Writing on the New York Times’ City Room Blog, Brooklyn resident Ellie Levi shared a moment she experienced while shopping in a Manhattan bodega last week: The vendor gave her a discount for dressing modestly.
From the New York Times by Ellie Levi:
Dear Diary:
I received a “modesty discount” the other day in a Manhattan bodega!
Bodega owner: “I like your style.”
Me: “Huh?”
Bodega owner: “The way you’re dressed. You are the only woman in New York City that I have seen who is completely covered up! And you know what? You look great! Total respect!”
Me: (Stunned.)
not only a discount
Brachos ad bli dai are showered on every woman and girl when she dresses with modesty.
Too bad so many have been duped by (in the Rebbe’s words): that goy in France.
Wake up yidden, and remember to get fully dressed today!

Thank you!

May others learn from you. V’Hamaven Yoven.
wow but...
… cant read the rest.. can you please post it.. gotten really curious :)
Selling
Most probably was a good selling technique
Even If you don’t get a discount you get an incredible reward for you , your family and Klal Israel
Well,
I find it creepy for a random vendor to comment on how a woman is dressed. (And untznius!)
And why is she happy that there are “men” who appreciate modest dress???
Dressing tznius is for yourself, not for what men think of you.
Gross.
very interesting
common 5 I agree with you 100 percent I want to add something the women of Crown Heights young age should be dressing properly

Re #5: I think the shopkeeper was legitimately impressed by the lady’s dress, based on his own beliefs. Nothing wrong with giving a complement.

Not sure how this blog figured out that I am a “Brooklyn resident” but in fact I am a nice frum girl who does reside in Brooklyn. It wasn’t creepy of the vendor at all – it was so sweet. The comments here are correct – we do receive a reward in heaven for our commitment to tznius but it’s nice to have a piece of it down here, too! Feel free to share widely with your daughters and sisters and friends!
