The winners of this years Chidon were
1st Place: Berel Paltiel and Avrohom Minsky
2nd Place: Mendy Bindel, Mendel Oster and Menachem Shuchat
3rd Place: Naftoli Barber
Shoneh Halachos is a program for eighth grade boys to encourage and guide them in the study of Halacha with the Alter Rebbe’s Psak which is clearly explained through notations made by Rabbi Levi Bistritzky a”h – former Rav pf Tzfat. Established by the Igud Menahalei Yeshivos of Crown Heights for Oholei Menachem and United Lubavitcher Yeshiva of Crown Street in the goal to expand the knowledge of Halacha and Yiras Shamayim of the talmidim of our community.

The program is in memory of HaRav Marlow a”h whom the Rebbe referred to as ‘Ish Halacha’ – a man of Jewish Law and is also leilui nishmas HaChosid Reb Schneur Zalman Gurary a”h to whom the interests of the Rebbe were very dear. Surely this serves as a fitting tribute to two outstanding individuals who were legendary for their limud and total hiskashrus. HaRav Marlow’s life was dedicated to the knowledge and clarification of Halacha. Thus, encouraging young talmidim to concentrate their efforts on Halacha is a continuation of his life’s work. Reb Zalman Gurary was a chosid personified, whose every fiber of his being was bittul to the Rebbe. May these boys continue to grow into a true Chayil – Chosid, Yirei Shomayim and Lamdin. The program is co-sponsored by Y. Sternberg, grandson of Reb Zalman Gurary and S.A. Rosenfeld, talmid of HaRav Marlow.
Every boy that scored an 80% on written tests throughout the year was a contestant in the Chidon was awarded $100.00 cash. An additional $18.00 was awarded to those boys that scored above a 90% on the tests.
The finale of the program was a Chidon amongst 34 contestants. A panel of judges led by Rabbi Yitzchok Zirkind asked difficult questions. The audience of parents, melamdim, community members and fellow students were astounded at the ability of the participants to quote the Halocho almost verbatim. The event was chaired by Rabbi Hershel Lustig – dean of Oholei Menachem who also serves as coordinator of the program.
