Bumbo Baby Seats Recalled

The South African maker of molded foam seats that help babies sit up is recalling about 4 million of the chairs because of safety problems. Babies can get hurt falling out of the seats.

If you have one of the Bumbo seats, you don’t have to throw it out or return it. Instead, the recall works a little like one for a car. Bumbo International Trust has a free fix that consists of a safety belt to keep kids in place.

You have to get those from the company, not the store where you bought the seat.

Bumbo’s repair kit also includes a warning sticker to remind parents and caregivers not to use the seat on raised surfaces, such as tabletops.

Don’t use the seats until they’re fixed, the company and the Consumer Products Safety Commission say.

For more details, including a video on how to repair the seats, see the Bumbo USA recall website.

  • why does this seat exist?

Why do these baby seats even exist? Babies learn how to roll, crawl, sit, stand and walk all on their own. Why are we poisoning the process by having them to sit in a seat if they can’t do it on their own?
It is incredibly damaging to a baby to interfere with their natural development.

This seat should be considered a medical device with specific usage only.

  • a safe mom

Your child’s safety should be number one!!!! and that includes reading the instructions on a product before using. On the Bumbo it says in front and back in 2 different ways the Bumbo is for FLOOR use ONLY! DO NOT PUT ON RAISED SURFACES, if you value your child’s safety why would you put them on a table to fall off. NEVER EVER leave your child in any form of baby seat unattended on a raised surface. This is a safe seat for the people who use it how its intended to use.

  • Same thing happened 5 years ago!

5 years ago, someone gave me a Bumbo seat as a gift. About a month later, I was told of a voluntary recall because parents were putting the Bumbo on countertops (as was advertised on the box!) I sent mine back. Apparently the company never learned, These straps should have been installed 5 years ago!

  • re: #4

That’s exactly the point. We already CAN walk, and we use cars just to travel faster. This seat is marketed as a tool to “help” your baby learn how to sit – which means forcing his/her back upright without having the muscle power or knowledge to do so.
It’s like expecting you to drive, without ever learning HOW to drive.
