Scott Brown Defeats Martha Coakley in MA Senate Race

On hand for Sen. Brown’s victory party was Chabad Shliach Rabbi Moshe Bleich, who congratulated the Senator.

BOSTON, MA [AP] — In an epic upset in liberal Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown rode a wave of voter anger to win the U.S. Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy for nearly half a century, leaving President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul in doubt and marring the end of his first year in office.

Addressing an exuberant victory celebration Tuesday night, Brown declared he was “ready to go to Washington without delay” as the crowd chanted, “Seat him now.” Democrats indicated they would, deflating a budding controversy over whether they would try to block Brown long enough to complete congressional passage of the health care plan he has promised to oppose.

“The people of Massachusetts have spoken. We welcome Scott Brown to the Senate and will move to seat him as soon as the proper paperwork has been received,” said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin said he would notify the Senate on Wednesday that Brown had been elected.

The loss by the once-favored Democrat Martha Coakley in the Democratic stronghold was a stunning embarrassment for the White House after Obama rushed to Boston on Sunday to try to save the foundering candidate. Her defeat on Tuesday signaled big political problems for the president’s party this fall when House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates are on the ballot nationwide.

Brown’s victory was the third major loss for Democrats in statewide elections since Obama became president. Republicans won governors’ seats in Virginia and New Jersey in November.

“I have no interest in sugarcoating what happened in Massachusetts,” said Sen. Robert Menendez, the head of the Senate Democrats’ campaign committee. “There is a lot of anxiety in the country right now. Americans are understandably impatient.”

Brown will become the 41st Republican in the 100-member Senate, which could allow the GOP to block the president’s health care legislation. Democrats needed Coakley to win for a 60th vote to thwart Republican filibusters. The trouble may go deeper: Democratic lawmakers could read the results as a vote against Obama’s broader agenda, weakening their support for the president. And the results could scare some Democrats from seeking office this fall.

The Republican will finish Kennedy’s unexpired term, facing re-election in 2012.

Now this is “change we can believe in”! After 47 years of tired, Communist Kennedy politics, now Massachusetts has a chance to have the winds of change blowing through their State.

Now it’s our turn…get rid of Chucky “Cheesy” Schumer & that dimwit Gillibrand.

    Go Rudy!!!

  • Moshie

A shonda! Forget about health care reform for all the huge Anash families who can’t make ends meet. And there’s still little a freshman in the minority party can go to get anything done.

  • A Great American

Mazel Tov Scott Brown! No Healthcare Bill pushed by the Libs on the left is FANTASTIC NEWS! Very Happy people are finally waking up from their slumber and seeing that hard work and effort as the Rebbe encourages is what prevails and not entitlements and handouts. We all welcome Scott Brown to the US Senate and wish him lots of luck. He is a Righteous Gentile right up there in ranks with Joe Wilson! G-d Bless America and Bring Moshiach Now!

  • Milhouse

No, Mr. President, Senator Brown’s election doesn’t count as a “job created”.

  • A True Conservative

America is finally waking up? Could it be? A republican in Massachusetts? Not since 1972. Mazel Tov Scott Brown on aa election that has drastic ramifications in this country. You just saved us from having healthcare rammed down our throats. If you can’t make ends meet than work harder. L’Chaim!

  • To Moshie

Did I understand you correct? Are you feeling bad for “huge Anash families who can’t make ends meet”?? Are you saying that because they can’t make their ends meet their health needs have to be supported by the taxpayers??? How about these people grow up and take responsibility for their huge families? Work harder, or, maybe, not have such huge family if you can’t support it? Everyone’s got a family to support, but supporting your huge family shouldn’t be my responsibility as a taxpayer.
    Go Scott Brown!

  • a barber (that needs business!!!)

WOW!!! The Yid has even longer hair than the (l’havdil) Goy!!!
now that’s change I could believe in!

I’m for healthcare reform. Why? To end pre-existing conditions clauses. To make healthcare more affordable for EVERYONE. Because families shouldn’t have to choose between their mortgage, feeding their family and treating their cancer.

“To Moshie” and “A True Conservative” – Work harder? Try saying that to the millions of people who HAVE been working harder and still lost their jobs to overseas workers or from their company closing. Try saying that to the families of those who lost their jobs and committed suicide when the bank foreclosed on them. Try saying that to the family who was in the news months ago – the mother decided to end her medical treatment and DIE so that her family wouldn’t lose their home.

Everything is out of balance partly because of greed. We need more affordable healthcare and education.

Step out of your bubble and feel other people’s pain before you tell them to work harder. Not everybody is as fortunate to live like you.

I’m also not pro-handouts when I’ve been working (and recently laid off) and my section 8 neighbors can afford cigarettes, booze, drugs and hanging out all day. There also needs to be more control in the banking and pharma industries. Did you know the less money you have, the more Chase charges you for money orders? Does this make any sense?!

    B“H

    Dear Moishie,

How much are you spending on health care for your ”large family in Anash who can’t make ends meet“?

As far as I know, people who ”can’t make ends meet“ generally qualify for Medicaid (and the elderly, as well as disabled children and adults, also qualify for Medicare).

It has been my observation that Medicaid and Medicare covers every bit as much of one’s health care as the insurance program of the average union worker. In fact, Medicaid even covers things that MY union health plan doesn’t cover, such as over-the-counter vitamin drops for babies, and support stockings for women with vein issues!

In addition, the ”dirty little secret“ of the US system of healthcare is that, even without Medicare or Medicaid, virtually no emergency room can refuse you treatment, even if you don’t have any money or any insurance. There are also free clinics — no appointment needed — such as the one near Kings County Hospital. So even without Obamacare, everyone can get healthcare in this country.

So maybe, you were hoping that Obamacare would not only cover what Medicaid and Medicare (and other free programs) already cover, but you ALSO hoped Obama would hand you a wad of bills on top of that, each time you visited the doctor?

Something tells me you’re an uninformed bleeding heart liberal, masquerading as a ”member of Anash with a large family who can’t make ends meet“.

The healthcare reform we need in this country (to save EVERYONE money, including the government) is in the form of tort reform. I suspect that you are not even aware of the potential improvements this could bring to our system. But Obama, Pelosi, and Reid won’t let this even come up for discussion in Congress. WHY? Because it wouldn’t increase the amount of government control and power, like ”Obamacare“ would.

Obamacare was never about improving the situation for ”Anash with large families who can’t make ends meet” — it was about giving more power to the government.

IMHO, it’s none of the US Government’s business how many pregnancies I’ve had, or how many times my husband broke his finger, or which medicines have ever been prescribed to my children. It’s my doctor’s business, and it’s even my health insurance company’s business. But it’s none of the Government’s business.

Good luck to you, fellow Yid. Aim higher than Obamacare. Aim to improve your parnassah situation; government aid is not parnassah — it’s a safety net.

  • Enough of Chuck

If Kennedy’s seat went republican after more than 60 years, Chuck Schumer’s seat can go republican after 12 years. It is up to us!

  • To Moderate

Oh, now we’re supposed to feel bad about those who had their homes foreclosed. Well, you know what? Don’t buy a house if you can’t afford one. See, this is a problem with many Americans now, they take homeownership for granted. If you can’t afford a house, rent an apartment! People is other countries live in apartments, why can’t you? If you want to buy a house, make sure you will be able to pay your mortgage even if you lose your job. Ok?

You want to make health care more affordable? At whose expense? Who will have to pick up the bill after the health care is made more affordable to YOU PERSONALLY? It will be your fellow taxpayers who pick up that bill.

  • Milhouse

There is no money tree. Anything you get comes from someone else’s pocket. You want insurance companies to be forced to take on customers who are already sick? Would you force them to insure houses that are already on fire? How about forcing them to insure the life of an 80-year-old?

  • To Moderate (2)

Also, why would you even say things like “Step out of your bubble and feel other people’s pain before you tell them to work harder. Not everybody is as fortunate to live like you.” You think we live BETTER/RICHER than most people? Or maybe we are just more RESPONSIBLE? Maybe we’re just not jumping into financial debt before making sure we can’t afford it in the long run?

As far as “We need more affordable healthcare and education”- what are you talking about? It’s already as affordable as it gets. Public school education is FREE. Healthcare has Medicaid and Medicare – also FREE for people who qualify. The healthcare reform Obama is proposing is not about making healthcare more affordable, it’s about making healthcare system more SOCIALIST, everyone will depend on government handouts, everyone will have to stand in line for months waiting for critical surgeries – just like it is in Europe now. There’s no such thing as free lunch. Wake up!

  • Moderate

MW: Thank you for your comment. I was looking into Medicaid because I can’t afford anything else right now but it seemed I wouldn’t qualify but maybe I was wrong.

“To Moderate”: I’m entertained by your comment. That is some great bubble you live in. :)

Anyone who is going to claim to be “conservative” should look into the frivolous costs attached to our wars, the money that goes from the government to the companies our politicians have a stake in.

  • Shalom

My oh my, you Lubavitchers are a randy group of right wingers who don’t care much for poor non Jewish folks and who certainly don’t like our President and our proud Jewish Senator (who is a big Chabad supporter.

Well, chaps. You fellows have one of the lowest voter turnout rates for orthodox communities in New York, so you aren’t really much of a threat.

Any you have that jolly red head, Mr. Sperlin, acting as your political guru. What to worry?

  • MOSHE II

The last Republican Senator in Mass. was Senator Ed Brooke, who was black and very liberal. More Democrat than Republican. The last REAL Republican Senator was Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. Who lost to J.F.K. This was in the early 1950’s.
To be fair, I know that the Democratic candidate Attorney General Martha Coakley is friendly with the Shaliach Rabbi Rachmiel Lieberman in Boston.
Never the less, BETTER A REPUBLICAN THAN A DEMOCRAT!!! MAZEL TOV!

  • A Liberal Jew

so if entitlements are bad then is Israel going to give back all the entitlements to the US taxpayer? You may need to re read the torah and the old rabbis again….
