JERUSALEM, Israel [CHI] — A police investigation into today’s terrible accident which claimed the life of 3-year-old Shula Swerdlov turned up troubling information on the driver, and the transportation company.

The van did not have an attendant as is required by law, nor did it have proper insurance, though more troubling is the drivers driving history, 31 traffic infractions with convictions, and was involved in 10 different accidents.

Police Superintendent Moshe Cohen, who heads the accident investigation unit in Jerusalem, told reporters “at around 2:30 [IST], the school bus which was transporting children ages 3 to 4 years old, dropped off the girl at the beginning of Haran Street and continued driving and striking the child. The girl’s 8 year old brother was standing across the street and witnessed the incident.”

Adding that there should have been a bus attended who walks the children off the bus, but there was no such person, and it will be checked with the transportation company.

Before Shula was struck, her 8-year-old brother stood across the street and waited for her. A neighbor, Yael, told an Israeli newspaper “I was standing at the entrance to my house and I suddenly heard a boy yelling and crying hysterically. I immediately understood that something terrible happened.”

is the driver self employed or works for a company? Either way, he should never driven at all after 31 violations. Plus, no attendant is not acceptable. I grew up riding the van and there’s always attendant when we were in elementary school. I have a daughter who’s at same age as Shula whose uncle is a good friend of mine in America. My condolences to her family.
