During the late afternoon yesterday [Monday], a young child was on his way home when he was approached by a white male. The incident happened as the boy reached the intersection of Brooklyn Ave and Union St. where he was approached by a white male standing near a car offering to give him a ride home. The boy who had B"H received the Shomrim Alert in school and was warned that there are predators on the loose in our area, knew not to accept the offer. They were also taught not to engage strangers in any conversation, even as innocent as giving directions or asking a name, and definitely not to accept any gifts, candies, or rides. Immediately upon being approached the boy sensed something was amiss and ran home.

The family immediately called Shomrim, who in turn enlisted the help of the NYPD Community Patrol Unit. For hours afterwards Shomrim members could be seen roaming the streets of Crown Heights along with the NYPD looking for the would-be kidnapper. Unfortunately, they were never-the-less unsuccessful in locating the perpetrator.

Attempted Child Abduction In Crown Heights

During the late afternoon yesterday [Monday], a young child was on his way home when he was approached by a white male. The incident happened as the boy reached the intersection of Brooklyn Ave and Union St. where he was approached by a white male standing near a car offering to give him a ride home. The boy who had B”H received the Shomrim Alert in school and was warned that there are predators on the loose in our area, knew not to accept the offer.

This incident comes after the numerous recent attempts in Borough Park and Flatbush to lure young children into hostile vehicles. Most recently this comes just after the tragic abduction in Lakewood earlier today in which a Jewish woman, approximately 20 years old, was abducted and assaulted.

The community, Shomrim, and the NYPD need your help. Although they searched the area, they were unable to locate the criminal. It now falls into the hands of each and every one of us in this community to; remain extremely vigilant, be on the lookout for suspicious activity, and make sure that our children know how to respond to such a situation. If you know any details about this crime, or if you witness a crime, please call Shomrim immediately at (718) 774-3333 24/7, and then call 911. Don’t hesitate to call if you witness suspicious activity, or someone loitering around young children looking like he’s up to no good. The more alert we are, the harder it will for someone to C”V commit such a horrid crime.

  • Can someone arange reps to go to schools

Please could someone tell Shomrim to send representatives
to all the schools, from kindergarten through hight school,
to warn and explain exlicity the danger of these stranger
approaches, ewen if dressed like a policeman or if the
    person is very friendly.

A lot of kids are friendly by nature and they have to be
really made scared by hearing EXACTLY that this not a
joke. These friendly kids (kein n hora) might have to be
    told even more than once.

    Where is the Vaad Hakal?!?
why isnt Moshe Rubashkin giving out letters and standing in the street yelling like it was an election?!?!

  • Hashem yishmor

"Mayor Meir Lichtenstein said preliminary reports indicate no bias motivation in the attack. "

…Borough Park, Flatbush, Lakewood and Crown Heights…h’mm I wonder.

  • Camras

Every block should pich in for a camera outside one home. Union-President Street between Kingston and Albany is in the prosses of doing this. Lets stop crime before the summer.

Pepper spray as sold at Sunshine Pharmacy is legal – you have to certify that you are over 18 years of age (I remember showing ID as well) and not a felon. Mace is probably illegal, as is a stun gun.

If you have a legitimate crime issue and you would like New York City Council Member Letitia James to address it with city officials, please send a detailed e-mail to:
    m35wice@council.nyc.ny.us
Please include your phone number and other relevant contact information. Please DO NOT respond by posting comments on this website.

  • SAVE OUR KIDS

Kids have to be explained that a "stranger" can be a sweet man who tells you he is lost, is a POLICEMAN Etc.

A "stranger" does not mean the wierd, strange looking guy of nighmares.

  • C.H.

Why doesn’t our VAAD HAKOHOL demand a police presence on the streets of this neighborhood. The only time you see police around is when they are on the way to the food establishments to buy their meals. If police were posted on every avenue, every couple of blocks, it would be a great deterrent to most of the crime that is happening here. The police were visible on Carroll and Schenectady for two days after Efraim Klien was killed and have not been seen there since. What are they getting paid for anyhow? Come on Moshe Rubashkin, where is your big mouth now? Elections are over. We have our Rabbonim, it is now time to put pressure on the police. Get to it.

  • THE BEST IDEA!

CAMRA’S on every block’s corners or two in the middle of every block facing corners, would realllly be the best idea!
If the vad hakol would organize that someone be responsible to REALLy have it done
    like by choosing
-one member per block to collect money for it
    – call the camra company and have it installed
-and the vad hakol would follow up on that one person per block doing it
    – it would be ammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmazing!

Moshe will meet with the NYPD and get some results. Sperling will get a photo with the brass and hang another frame on his wall.

  • We need reps in the schools

I agree. All Schools must have policemen and Shomrim act out such situations and show the children how to act. Friendly children might need a good scare. More patroling police would be nice…

SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET THE WORD OUT TO EACH AND EVERY CHILD!

While many community members get the news online and take time to read the posted community circulars, unfortunately we have many parents to do not have the resources to arm themselves with this information and not properly informed to educate their children. We are a big community with big families and while many of us can take the necessary precautions in protecting our children, not all families can. WE NEED TO CALL OUR FRIENDS, OUR NEIGHBORS, ETC., AND ENSURE THAT EVERYONE IS INFORMED AND CAN RESPONSIBLY TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN.

Please make a special effort to reach out to those families less fortunate than us who require every day assistance with their children and may not know how to handle this situation.
    EVERY CHILD IS PRECIOUS.

ALL PARENTS NEED TO REACH OUT TO OUR SCHOOLS. CALL YOUR CHILDS TEACHER, PRINCIPAL; MAKE SURE THEY EDUCATE THE CHILDREN AND REMIND THEM DAILY. THAT’S RIGHT, CHILDREN ARE CHILDREN AND THEY NEED TO BE REMINDED DAILY. IN THE CLASS ROOM, LUNCH ROOM. THEY NEED TO BE TAUGHT WHAT TO DO, HOW TO ACT, ETC.

THIS IS AS SERIOUS AS SERIOUS GETS!

WE MUST ALL CALL THE VAAD HAKOHOL AND ASK WHERE ARE THEY?! THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT THEY SHOULD BE NOTIFYING THE PUBLIC ON, CALLING TOWN HALL MEETINGS, ENSURING THAT WE HAVE A STRONG AND CONSISTANT ROUND THE CLOCK POLICE PRESENSE.

DURRING THE ELECTION, MOSHE RUBASHKIN PERSONALLY CALLED EVERY HOUSEHOLD TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY VOTED. WHERE IS HE NOW?! IS THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN NOT EQUALLY IMPORTANT?! MOSHE IF YOU ARE READING THIS, GET OUT AND EDUCATE THE PUBLIC. PICK UP A TZACH LIST AND CALL EVERY MOSAD, EVERY MECHANECH AND GET THE WORD OUT. WE NEED THE VAAD’S VOICE HEARD NOW… BEFORE THE CAMERAS AND THE PRESS ARE OUT…

Thanks to http://www.crownheights.info for continuously informing the public of these important issues and special thank to the Shomrim who are protecting our streets and our children. All of those who can should do their best to support these fine young men who work round the clock to police our community.

  • Concerned Parent

Its also just as important not to scare the wits out of the children. The warning to the kids should be just once and short & to the point. My son was scared to go to school today on the bus.

  • Suggestion

Tell Moshe Rubashkin/Osdoba that Rabbi Shwei is against doing anything about these crimes.

    1. We will get a strong psak from Osdoba that one must do someting. Maybe even his three new cohorts will sign?

    2. Rubashkin will then invest all his energies to fight crime.

  • rivka

i have kids at lubavitch yeshiva-crown st., and bais rivka and they did have disccusions and announcements to the kids about strangers, etc.
Lubavitch yeshiva also sent out a notice for all the parents.
Yes, my son was scared to go to school himself the next day, especially after sitting down with him and expalining what to do and not to do with a stranger. In the same breath I explained that before he was aware of this there were bad people already and he wasn’t afraid. So we must be vigilent, aware, alert, and street-smart….and continue living our lives.
Sometimes we take for granted the independant lives our kids live here in C.H. with everything in walking distance and this is a sad reminder of the real world we live in.

Because he is on parole, the police are not supposed to meet with Moishie.

Furthermore, unlike Moishie, Chanina’s record is one of successful negotiation and meetings with the NYPD. Moishie has done his best to blunt Chanina’s clout and the community is paying the price!

Time for the sh’chuna to wake up & smell the coffee – before the long, hot summer!

    You got THAT right!!

  • safety first

Re: pepper spray or any other weapon–if the perpetrator is stronger than the victim, he can grab it away, and use it on the victim. Better to educate the community in safety and crime prevention, and get more police protection for the neighborhood. Whites and blacks can join forces on this issue.
