New Supportive Housing Facility Proposed For Crown Heights

by CrownHeights.info

The new owners of 245 Clarkson Avenue near Nostrand Avenue, which is presently home to a parking lot servicing visitors for the nearby medical centers and hospitals, presented a proposal to the Brooklyn Community Board 9 (CB9) housing committee to build a 11 story, 135-unit Homeless shelter on their lot.

According to a report on the proposal, it outlines a similar homeless shelter to the newly opened CAMBA Facility “Home” for persons experiencing homelessness just one block away at 329 Clarkson Ave.

In a press release from NYS Assembly candidate Ahron Gluck, he questioned the location, asking why the area of Crown Heights which “already has a brand new Homeless shelter welcoming unstable mentally disturbed individuals and criminals,” needs such a project.

At a meeting covering the new facility, select members of Brooklyn Community Board 9 voiced concerns, but ultimately, the Homeless shelter proposal advanced to the CB9 general meeting and passed.

The developers filed a building permit for 245 Clarkson Avenue, and architect Andrew Knox of ESKW/A filed plans for a 135-unit, 131,812-square-foot project, according to city documents. The developer behind the 11-story building is the tax-payer funded non-profit Alembic Community Development, which builds Supportive Housing similar to the CAMBA Housing taking place a block away.

The Gluck campaign noted for the community that residents of Crown Heights and East Flatbush must be registered to vote as a Democrat to vote for NYS Assembly candidate Ahron Gluck in next month’s Democratic primary election: https://e-register.vote.nyc/
