Crown Heights Boy Saved by Helmet

The cracked helmet in the above photo – sent to us by the parent of a child who was wearing it when he fell of his bicycle – is a stark reminder of the potential dangers of biking, and how the simple act of wearing a helmet can save one from possible serious injury.

The boy’s mother asked us to share this message with our readers:

Today my son was spared a possible serious head injury because he was wearing a bicycle helmet. He was riding his bike in the park and swerved trying to avoid hitting a child that ran into his path. He stopped short to brake and was thrown off his bike. I could see from the crack in the helmet how hard he fell. Boruch Hashem he was wearing it!

Friends, I see too many children, teens and adults riding bikes and scooters, roller blading, all without wearing helmets. As parents it is our responsibility to make sure that before our children go out to do these activities that they put on proper fitting helmets. As adults, you need to use your own common sense and realize how you need to protect yourselves.

I am happily signing my name to this letter so I’m not just another anonymous person on a rant.

Have a safe and healthy summer.

Baruch Hashem, the boy is OK.

One thing to know that wasn’t in the article. The boy may be OK, but the helmet is not. Helmets (both bicycle and motorcycle) are made for one impact only. Once the helmet hits something, the foam inside is compacted and the helmet must be destroyed and discarded. Cut the straps so nobody else can use it, then throw it away.

Get a new one. It’s money well spent.

May we all be free of injury, but as they say, trust in Hashem, but row away from the rocks.

Yes, we know that the helmet cannot be used again. In the hospital we were told that he may get compensation for a new one from the company but not sure yet.

  • Car accidents too

Thanks for pointing that out. It’s important to note that the same applies to car seats that have gone through a car accident for the same reasoning.

  • Parents!!!

Parents!!! Please make sure that your kids are wearing helmets!! I passed a young teenager riding up Brooklyn today wearing no helmet. Parents, wake up!!
