Councilman Calls on NYPD to Fire Officers Who Beat Unarmed Jewish Man

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Councilman David G. Greenfield is calling on the NYPD to fire and criminally investigate the two officers caught on surveillance video severely beating an unarmed Crown Heights man inside the Alternative Learning Institute for Young Adults Center on East New York Avenue last week.

The story was first reported here on CrownHeights.info.

The man, Ehud H. Halevi, had permission to sleep at ALIIYA, which is a synagogue and outreach center for troubled youth serving the local Jewish community, when two officers from the 71st Precinct confronted him last Monday night. After Mr. Halevi told the officers he had permission to stay at the center, the two officers attempted to arrest him. When Mr. Halevi turned away from the officers, one of the officers immediately assumed a boxing stance before punching the defendant numerous times and continuing to attack the defenseless man. Both officers then proceeded to repeatedly beat Mr. Halevi with their fists and batons dozens of times. After several minutes, the officers placed him into custody with the help of ten additional police officers.

The entire episode was captured on surveillance cameras inside the center. Ironically, the victim was charged with felony assaulting a police officer and four misdemeanor charges before being released on bail.

“These appear to be two of the worst members of the NYPD. It is an embarrassment to the entire outstanding police department that two trained and armed police officers were unable to arrest this individual without resorting to the disturbing violence clearly shown on the video. By my count, one officer punched the victim over 20 times after he was already subdued. That’s insane,“ said Greenfield. ”I am calling on the NYPD to do the right thing and fire these two officers. I have also asked the District Attorney’s office to investigate these officers for possible criminal behavior in their assault on this defenselessness man. We must send a message that this type of violence against New York City citizens by anyone, much less police officers, will not be tolerated,” said Councilman David G. Greenfield.

Greenfield also noted that this was why he is supporting new legislation to establish an Inspector General of the NYPD. “Recent events have shown that there is a very clear need for additional oversight of the NYPD. That is why I am co-sponsoring legislation that would appoint an Inspector General to oversee the daily operations of the NYPD to prevent incidents like these from happening again.”

Why didn’t you post the details about the press conference? The community must come out and unite in support of Halevi and against this terrible misconduct of these 2 officers

  • CH Police are known to be anti semites

They don’t protect or serve, they seem to often be on the side of the REAL criminals and use any chance to hurt a Jew. Any decent officer would transfer as soon as possible because it is impossible to do a respectible job as a police officer and remain in the Crown Heights police station. It’s time the truth came out.

Ehud should have a complete refuah, and the police officers should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!

They don’t protect or serve, they seem to often be on the side of the REAL criminals and use any chance to hurt ANYONE. Any decent officer would RESIGN as soon as possible because it is impossible to do a respectable job as a police officer and remain in ANY PEACE OFFICER CAPACITY. It’s time the truth came out.

  • The missing piece?

So if he had permission from Feiglin to be there why did Trappler call the cops?

  • huh?

this guy clearly resisted arrest. the police officers were called by an aliya member and let in by the same aliya member. did the police officer punch the guy too many times? absolutely; this is a settlement out of court no doubt..on our tax dollars, thank you aliya for housing vagrants, which as it seems, has caused an inner conflict within your constituency, now we foot the bill. nice going!

Wrong, the cop seemed justified. People call the police to effect law and order. Too many hypocrites. Police officers are not anti Semitic as one blogger posted. Too many people here create bias toward the police. If you do not want the police near you than don’t call them. Protect yourselves from violent offenders, rapists, thugs in the streets, enjoy. . Hypocrites are all over this unappreciative city. I own my own business and thank god we have police officers protecting us in this crime infested city. I believe that video is justified. Again you don’t like what the police do? Don’t call them and protect yourselves. The nerve of hypocrites . The guy is the video should have respected the law, if police tell you to leave , the best thing to do is leave. The cop should get a medal.

  • this is disgusting

this un-human, digusting atrocity makes me want to throw up. Are you sure that the policeman wasnt on drugs? disgusting!!! cant believe it!

  • David

You’re telling me there isn’t a good Jewish Lawyer that’s willing to jump all over this one?
This is police brutality as a definition.

  • Inanna Baskan

The man did not resist arrest. He didn’t do anything. He just stood there and they started beating him for no reason. And if he had permission to be there, who called the police against him?

Sue their collective behinds and make it the top dog. the mayor.. the buck stops at the top and if they issue uniforms to thugs and teach them inappropriate behavior then show them it’s NOT OK
As a society we have become scared.. either it’s the people in the streets we are scared of or the uniforms and people that have power.,.no longer do we stand up so support this man and get him good legal help and sue the arse off the NYPD and the mayor. This is not the first time unformed thugs have just lashed out it has to STOP.

  • george Barr

Having read your comment John Hinkman.. I hope your not on the receiving end one day. But if you are then realize you supported these thugs.
If the officers had been professional enough to check facts rather than react violently first the issue of right or wrong would not be getting asked. They acted as they did and this displays total ignorance of a mans rights and the un professional approach of not doing the job properly. Information .. correct information is vital to good policing no matter where you are in this world.

This is sickening. What if it was you getting punched? If that councilman does not protect the citizens from the out of control police, he should get tossed out too. 10, ten! policemen and one crazy woman with the bat beating the kid who had no defense?
