Friends of Aliya BBQ

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Aliya celebrated its fifth anniversary with a “Friends of Aliya BBQ” at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ari Chitrik.

The evening began on the deck with a gourmet barbeque prepared by Chef Meir Kohn and his staff. Magician, Ziggy went around entertaining the crowd and as night descended the crowd came inside for the presentation and dessert.

The presentation was M.C’d by long time Aliya member Chaim Lazarus. Chaim spoke about his upbringing on Shlichus and how he found the same non judgmental, warm chabad house atmosphere at Aliya that he was used to while growing up. Chaim then welcomed another member Mendel Pil who explained how without Aliya, he and many others would have no connection to Yiddishkeit even though they live in Crown Heights.

Chaim then called up Rabbi Dovid Grossbaum, Aliyas new Rebbi who is now teaching a S’micha course to the Aliya members. Rabbi Grossbaum gave a short D’var Torah and connected it with Aliyas attitude and accepting approach that attracts so many young people.

Rabbi Feiglin was then called up and thanked all aliya members for helping keep aliya the lively and happy place that it is. He then thanked all of Aliya’s supporters for their continued support always making sure Aliya has what it needs to help its members. Mr. Ben Federman from 1saleaday.com was honored with an award for his financial and business support he gave to Aliya. Then Mr. Mordechai Feiglin received a reward for sponsoring the evening, flying across the world for it and being a long time supporter.

The evening concluded with a video presentation of activities at Aliya over 2007-08, more delicious desserts and more magic from Mr. Ziggy.

Yashaar Koach to Rabbi Feiglin, his staff and supporters who realize the need for this most important shlichas. May you have great success in all your endeavors and may you have all you need to continue this
    very important work.

Thank you for doing the Rebbe’s work and looking after our children with Ahavas Yisroel and dedication

  • Mendy

THEY ARE NOT PLAYING CARDS. THEIR WAS A MAGICIAN GOING AROUND DOING CARD TRICKS!

WITH SUPPOSEDLY CHASSIDISHE YUNGERLEIT BEING SO QUICK TO JUDGE ITS NO WONDER WE NEED SUCH AN ORGANIZATION.

THESE ARE THE YUNGERLEIT THAT CARE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUR YOUTH AND CAME TO HELP WITH A NON JUDGMENTAL ATTITUDE.

I WAS AT THIS EVENT AND IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL EVENT. THEIR WAS DVAR TORAH, CHESSED AND A BUNCH OF CHASSIDISHE YUGERLEIT COMING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE RATHER THAN SIT BACK AND COMPLAIN.

REMEMBER “DON LEKAV ZCHUS” THAT MIGHT HELP REMOVE THE NEED FOR THIS ORGANIZATION.

thats a shame eli because id like to pour cold water on the fact that playing cards is the least of our problems regarding yungerleit these days!!!

  • ploni almoni

Are we sure you want to give people whose yiddishkeit is weak smicha?

Smicha indicates someone is ready to be a manhig of a kehila -it is a very serious thing that demands great yiras shamayim.

It could backfire and cast a negative light on chabad as a whole

  • Proud!!

eli get off your high horse and stop being so bloody judgmental. You wonder why people stop being frum, it’s because people like you just want to point out all the negative stuff that they do and put constant pressure on them to be chassidish. Well it doesn’t come easy to some people. Playing cards and drinking beer with Jews is better than doing it with Goyim – look at the positive side. Look at what the kids ARE DOING. For them it may be a major test to get out of bed and put on a yamulakah. But you don’t see that.

Be proud of the fact that they are identifying that are a Yid. They have issues and want to be better. I don’t know a single person who has no issues. And the ones who say they have no issues are the ones with the major ones, cause they are blind of their own faults.

These kids just wear their issues on the outside. These kids are open, loving and excepting, more than any ‘upstanding’ person in this community.
The plastic and pressurizing lifestyle of Crown Heights makes the issues of rebellion more prominent. If you don’t fit the mold, you get kicked out the door.
I take a page out of their book and so should you. They want to help themselves, they want to be better and they work so bloody hard to do it. I am proud of everyone of them. I support every person who supports them.

I, as a member in the community, for over twenty years can say. that the work Rabbi moshe feiglin does. is outstanding, from his shul, his trips to Isreal. to the love and care, he shows for the teenagers, and young adults.is soething you don’t see as mich as it’s needed!
p.s.I have no bios reasons to say this being that he does not really know me.nor my children.

Despite the fact that the article spelled my name wrong…

The event was wonderfully warm and inspiring time for everyone in attendance. Huge thanks to all the people who came to support ALIYA. Each Yid who came did wonderful tzedokah and tikkun olam. They all have a share in the World to Come for their mitzvah.

I have seen firsthand so many of the problems that have affected crown height’s youth, and if Rabbi Feiglin and ALIYA were not there, doing great work, it would be much much worse. ALIYA gets kids off their basement couches and into Shul on a Friday night – that is the harsh reality of the situation in CH and why we need ALIYA.

I agree with the above comments that it is those quick judgments and pigeonholing and finger-pointing that causes lots of the problems. Chabad is famous all over the world for the good work they do and their accepting atmosphere and warm loving-kindness for every Jew. If Crown Heights continues to be insular and not accepting of its very own children… Then we can truly say “oy vey.”

  • Plony Almoni

Eli, it’s people like you that are the source of this problems in Lubavitch today. I wonder how you expect yourself or your kids to go out on Shlichus. Isn’t the idea of Aliya what Shlichus is all about? No, Shlichus is when you go out to suburban America and score some rich Jews, right? Where is the love of all JEWS? Why, the ones close to home don’t count, right? Lubavitch has some serious issues it has do deal with. Instead of focusing only on conquering the globe we have to dedicate some time for introspection. We can’t expect all our children to want to become Shluchim. We have to provide alternatives early on, if we do so we won’t need such a program.

Being someone who attended Aliya I empathize with those who are part of the program. I know what it’s like to feel alienated from the community I grew up in (I still do). Aliya brought me to where I am today and I thank them for it. Rabbi Feiglin is doing a great job!

    Sincerely yours,

    Dov

  • Bravo!

The reason Aliya succeeds is because THEY CARE! That’s more than Eli, Ploni almoni & their pals do.

Stop pointing the finger & DO SOMETHING POSITIVE if you feel it’s such a shanda! I just love the way everyone criticizes but wouldn’t get involved because it’s not their kids. Well, it ain’t MY kids either! But I worry for my grandchildren & everyone else’s. Unless we acknowledge that there are kids who need Aliya we will see more & more out there who are rejected because they are “different.” But really, they aren’t so much different, everyone has questions about something, just some are more open.

    B“H
I didn’t read any of the unsigned comments.
    No guts!
Plus, questioning the motivation re: card playing, etc. w/o a name is defamation and is a ‘pashvil’ which the Rebbe, MH”M, hated.
So, you folks who do these things remember you’re NOT Chabadnicks. You can look in the mirror and say: “I am a Chabadnick.” This won’t help. You’re mother, father, family and friends can tell you that you are a Chabadnick, these are all lies.
    Delusional teenagers. There are many.

  • mom in kan tziva

the smicha of chabad is generally looked down upon. what I think as to why the reason the rebbe wanted our guys to get ‘smicha’ for before they got married is that they should know the basics of running a jewish home.

  • Yosaif

Dovid Leib shy’ , good to see you got an aliya. Beracha vehatzlacha. Achicha hadoresh shelomcha vetovascha tamid, Yosaif Yitzchak

  • An Aliya staff member

The Smicha program Aliya is offering isn’t making anyone community Rabbis. If they want to become a Rabbi they will have to take further and more in depth studies and tests following this program, as will be indicated in the text of the Smicha certificate. It makes them qualified to run a frum home and rear a frum family being that it focuses on Orach Chaim rather than just Yoreh Deah (which the generic smicha does).
Furthermore, all participants make the commitment to be shomer basic Torah and Mitzvos before commencing the program.

  • Kop Doktar

I think it is wonderful to have such a progressive group who celebrate their anniversary at an affair where men and women sit together in open friendship and entertainment.

Living with the times means we must be non-judgemental but accepting all standards of yiddishkeit and chassidishkeit, even if it means tolerating standards that would make are forefathers turn over in their graves.

Magic shows, BBQ and liquor in a mixed crowd of chassidishe yungerleit in the company of their females aquaintences must be taken in stride.

This is progressive thinking to save the troubled youth and show them that one can be chassishe and still be open minded.

  • Toishov Hashchuna

Hey Kop – Did you lose your kop??? What are you saying??!!! Are you being serious or sarcastic??? I am frightened that it is not clear!!!! Someone tell me please.

  • Dov Oliver

Moishe Fieglin and all the others at Aliyah, good on ya!!!
Don’t take any notice of the pompus tall poppy syndrome cynics. The best way to help people is by helping them as people ie the people who they are and where they are at. The rest of you are driving our kids and teenagers away with your inflexible and ultimately self righteous standards. Pull your heads out of the sand and when you wanna make a comment make it a nice one or don’t comment at all, if we want to hear Lubavitch bashing there are other sources, it should not be coming from within.
Moisdos such as Aliyah give people a way to connect and maintain their connection to the best stuff on earth, CHABAD!
Mottel you should have lots of fair dinkum true blue Nachas and Moish you should go from strength to strength!

Moshe is literally saving Jewish children from death, he deserves more than any human being can bestow upon him.He is the only one I know who knows what the Rebbe wants of him.If anyone has a criticism of his truly holy work, I challenge them to do better.I bless him with success both spiritually and materially.
