Beware: Scammer Swaps Torn $20 Bill for Two $10’s
CROWN HEIGHTS — A Jewish man was robbed on Carroll Street after being duped into giving a stranger change for a $20 bill, only to discover that he received only half of a torn $20 bill.
The incident occurred on Carroll Street and Troy Avenue at approximately 6:00 Wednesday evening. Police say that a man approached his victim and asked if he had change for a twenty dollar bill, the victim opened his wallet and pulled out two tens and handed them over. The thief then gave the man a twenty that was torn in half and fled.
Police was called and after a search police had managed to stop a man that fit the description of the thief, only the victim was not able to identify him. A police report for grand larceny was filed and an investigation has been opened.

gave him “half of a torn 20 dollar bill” would avoid comments such as “ just tape the pieces back together”…

Anything under $250 is known as ‘petty larceny’. Grand larceny is $259 and up.
