Woman Assaulted and Mugged – 2 Arrested in Buyback Sting
A young Jewish woman was the victim of a violent mugging, two female muggers grabbed her by her hair and threw her to the ground then made off with her iPhone. A non-Jewish couple passing by came to her aid and called the police. A clever message about owing someone money, lured the muggers into a sting and they were arrested.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at around 9:30pm on Union Street between Brooklyn and Kingston Avenues. The victim, a young Jewish woman in her 20’s, was grabbed by her hair from behind and violently thrown to the ground.
One of the two muggers, who the victim identified as both Black females in their teens, proceeded to take her iPhone and flee. Aside from bruising on her knees the victim was B”H not seriously hurt.
A non-Jewish couple who heard the cries for help rushed to her aid, called 911, and offered her their phone to call family for help – which she did and they in turn called Shomrim.
By the time Shomrim volunteers arrived on scene police were already there and took the victim for a ‘canvass’ in an effort to located the muggers, but were unsuccessful and a police report was filed.
An attempt to locate the iPhone through the ‘Find my iPhone’ feature failed since the muggers shut it off.
The following day the victim noticed – through iCloud which automatically backs up the phone – that her phones text messaging was being used, and apparently the muggers were texting out inappropriate photos of themselves, and sending lewd messages to her own contacts.
Not one to sit back the victim had a friend of hers text her phone and say “Hey, where are you? I have the money I owe you” they responded “how much was it?” she answered “dont you remember? 850”, the muggers responded “well I am busy at the summer youth employment place that I work, I will send two girls to pick it up.”
The muggers then went on to describe what the ‘two girls’ will look like and they set up a meeting on Carroll and Brooklyn Avenues for later that day at 5:00pm. Detective Six, Detective Mehood and Detective Weng, who were assigned to the case, parked in unmarked cars with the victim and waited for the exchange.
After waiting for over 20 minutes the ‘two girls’ did not show, so the victim texted them again “I need to leave, where are you?” they then noticed two girls waiting at the corner pull a phone and text back that “they should be there now”.
The victim immediately identified her attackers and the detectives moved in and arrested them both. Turns out that the one who committed the crime was 16-years-old and the other even younger. One was arrested and charged with the burglary and the other, due to her age, was released into the custody of her parents.
CrownHeights.info would like to commend the victim for her bravery and ingenuity in apprehending these criminals, and the detectives for working swiftly with victim and facilitating these arrests.
wow
what an awesome story!
worried
I was worried the other day when I saw a young lady talking on her phone in the street. May we should only use our phones openly in an emergency so these muggings should not take place.
Glad the young woman is ok

Wow! This story is amazing!
TIME TO TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE
WE’VE GOT TO HAVE FULL TIME, COMPREHENSIVE SECURITY PATROLS ON ALL NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS- BUT GOOD LUCK FINDING THE FUNDING.
Charged with burglary?
What about assault which is more serious? What’s happening here and in almost every other violent attack on the Jewish community in Crown Heights is that the police are giving a message that it is okay to attack a Jew. A person of 15 years of age can be taken into custody. Leaving them with their parents and no criminal record after a violent attack is a joke and an invitation for a repeat c”v.
B
She’s lucky the girls who committed the crime were both young and stupid.
mendy
People this cant go on day after day.
Call a protest at the 71.
How much can we take.

CROWN HEIGHTS RESIDENTS COMMEND YOUR BRAVERY!!!
PLEASE POST PICTURES OF THE MUGGERS!
31, Female, Los Angeles
I work out in Sun Valley, which is a particularly unwholesome part of the valley, in LA County. Every day when I walk to the Post Office to pick up our company’s mail, I carry a cute little pink mace on a key chain, and I automatically feel safer.
Do it, ladies! You’ll thank me.
Criminals under 16
And there are very many of them in Crown Heights – are getting the clear message that it’s ok for them to damage, destroy and do whatever they want (and this is what they want) without fear of consequences until the age of 16. This is not the case in other areas where ‘minors’ do get arrest records and forms of reform.
why
How do you people live in Crown Heights??? Do you realize how sad it is that you have to ask yourself if you should take out your phone to use in public!!!
what????
why is it dangerous to walk on our own streets an hour after it got dark???? these muggings have to stop!!!
When a Jew attacks a Black
It makes national news and usually ends up with a 10 year prison conviction.
wow
STOP texting while you are out, especially at night. you are asking for trouble. we are dealing with animals. they do not know what an honest day’s work is, unless stealing and honest mean the same thing?
AMAAAAAZING!!!!!!
usually these mugging stories are boring and all the same, this one kept me hooked it was soo cool and spellbounding. So smart of them!!

Her phone was out because she was about to call 911!
Why are you so fast to blame the victim? Maybe stop for a second and realize that you are not the only one in this world with brains.
She felt uneasy about the 2 girls walking behind her. She quickly attempted to cross the street and call 911. Unfortunately they caught her off guard and shoved her to the ground before she got a chance.
If you have nothing intelligent to add then DON’T.
Victim
I am THE young Jewish woman and I just want to publicly say that all of the Officers,Lieutenants, Detectives at the 71st precinct did an amazing job! I was shocked at how much they cared about a cell phone robbery. I honestly feel safer in this neighborhood knowing all of the hard work and dedication they put into there job day and night.
curious
Isn’t it better to keep the tactics quiet so you can use it again next time?

your protest idea is outrageous. I don’t know if you noticed but the local precinct with the help of shomrim had closed almost all these cases in a positive way arresting the perpetrators. the police can’t stop a bad guy from being bad, they can do their best in preventing and once a crime was committed to close the case, and for the most part they have been doing so. in the summer with extra day light hours and many young teens not being occupied crime always rises but police and shomrim have done a wonderful job in closing those cases. you can help too, if you see something saysomething and help your local law enforcement curb crime.
Abba
Article dosent say if the girl got her phone back.
Victim's sister
Yes, she got her phone back B”H.

Yeah, usually they take the phone (or any stolen property) and make the victim track it down. I once had to wait 6 months and then first file papers in downtown Brooklyn and then shlep out to Queens to get MY property back!! Double the insult.
Yoni
There are very places for a women to walk alone at night and feel comfortable. Honestly.

Congratulations to the police, detectives and Shomrim for their efficient work, and of course the young lady (victim) who used a clever way of catching the criminals. Too bad that the younger criminal was not arrested. My opinion is if she does the crime, it should not matter her age (if she is 10 years old) she should be arrested and punished. I sympatheize with the victim for what she went through, and I’m happy that there a happy ending.
