Man Accused of Burning Mezuzos Is in Police Custody

The suspect in this week’s hate-crime burning of a dozen Jewish doorway adornments in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is in custody, a law enforcement official said Wednesday.

He was identified as Ruben Ubiles, 35, who the police say has more than 50 prior arrests, on charges including robbery, assault, and weapons and drug possession. No information was immediately released on where and how Mr. Ubiles, who uses several names and was initially identified by the police as Rubin Ublies, was apprehended.

On Monday afternoon, the police said, 11 of the symbols, known as mezuzot, were damaged by fire inside 85 Taylor Street, a public-housing complex on Williamsburg’s south side. On Tuesday, another mezuza was burned a block away inside 130 Clymer Street.

The burnings Monday coincided with Holocaust Remembrance Day, but the police said they did not know whether the timing had anything to do with the crime. A mezuza is a small case containing a miniature scroll with verses from Deuteronomy that many Jews affix to their doorframes as a reminder of God’s presence and commandments.

  • 50 prior arrests!

He was CAUGHT 50 times, how many hundreds of crimes has this low life committed? Why is a career criminal like this allowed to victimize society again and again and again?! There is something very wrong with the criminal justice system. When he kills someone R”L THEN they’ll lock him up with a lengthy sentence…

  • you buyin?

hey #3, you okay with your taxes going up in order to support your policy of ‘lock him up and throw away the key’? ’cause that’s what it would take, MORE money for the PRIVATE prison systems…which we all pay for…nice, eh?

The more you take trash (this criminal) out of the dumpster (jail) the worse it gets. Let the garbage men(justice system) take the garbage and put it in a landfill (life sentence for a habitues offender and now for hate crime which is btw 5 years min sentence). But also it you keep pulling out the trash out of the dumpster it get wormy, buggy, and filled with rats(criminal friends that could CV cause more problems in the city like more hate crimes, robbery and murder)

I think I would let them take my tax money for that. Its a good investment.

Reply to #5 ” you buyin.”
It is better to spend the money than to allow a dangerous animal like this on the streets.

  • Money can't compare

Back in the 70’s. a friend of mine was going to college for a Law degree. One of the topics at the time was putting murderers or other death-deserving criminals in jail. “Why waste tax-payer money on these monsters? Just execute them, they deserve it anyway.”

His response was, “You cannot compare someone’s life to money.”

How does that prove it? Do you imagine that antisemitism is the only possible reason why someone might do this?!
