Convicted Rapist Attempted to Break into an Apartment

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — While men were still in Shul on Friday night one resident found a perpetrator in the lobby of a building, attempting to break in to an apartment on Carroll Street and Kingston Avenue, when the resident confronted the intruder he attempted to reason with him and produced an ID card from the Department of Corrections.

Another resident in the building, who is a Shomrim member, walked out of his apartment and into the scene, the perp then managed to break free and flee the building. Upon learning this the Shomrim member called for backup and chased the perp who fled down Carroll Street towards Albany Avenue, around 10 Shomrim members then apprehended the perp between Troy and Schenectady Avenues and police were called.

When police arrived to the scene at first they hesitated to place the perp in handcuffs but when the Shomrim member who witnessed the incident raised the suspects past conviction and the risk the entire building had been in had he have managed to break into an apartment, the ranking officer on scene ordered his arrest.

The police officers searched the suspect and they found a chisel which was long enough to be able to use as tool to gain entry to an apartment, and when asked why he had it in his possession he stated that he works in demolition, and when further asked what he was doing in the building he claimed that he was helping a woman with her stroller and two kids.

CrownHeights.info would like to urge all resident to make sure the doors to their apartments are secured and more importantly that the building doors are secure as well. In case of an emergency always call 911 and Shomrim at (718) 774-3333 24/7.

Isn’t it a pity that you have to lobby and advocate to get a crime to be taken seriously? Someone tossed a brick though the window of a bedroom in which my children were sleeping. The police officer answering the call said it was harassment. I asked about reckless endangerment as a possible label for the offense.
“Oh yeah”. he said. Of course nothing was done.
There is politics in the compilation of crime statistics. Peoplle’s lives are at stake. Someone higher up is tying the hands of cops on the beat. Where does the buck stop? Who will investigate?

Funny how in every story there is a shomrim member who lives in the same house where the crime is taking place, but if thats what it takes to keep CH safe then so be it.

Thank you shomrim for doing such a great job!!

with all the secutirty in crown heights there is still “eggplants” who attempt of breaking in. that is pretty sad!!!
they are seriously not scared of anything

Yasher Koyach Shomrim for saving the day once again. This is pretty scary that this guy was wondering around like that. Why was he not behind bars? Another reason unfortunatly to be on major alert for crazy people like this. Thanks for the alert. May we have a peaceful week.

Wake up people! An arrest doesn’t mean a conviction. the perp can be out on the street in a couple of hours and visiting your block. Who in the community follows the story? Does anyone care if he was released or detained? I don’t know – do you! Does anyone know??

And if he was detained: Was the perp held for bail? What were the terms of his release and size of bond? When is his court dates? You gotta follow this through the system!

  • picture please

Is there any way that we can get a picture of this guy posted, so people will be able to recognize him. He will be out soon, and back on the streets, we should be aware of who he is.

  • BUILDING MANGER

I urge every one who lives in buildings to beg there super to put locks on the doors of the frint of the building. do you know how many buildings have the front door open leaving it a free for all to enter. on shabbos dont be lazy .take a key belt . dont leave the door open at any time.

It was shabbos and i’m sure the shomrim people who were there were only mechalel shabbos to the bare minimum. this is not to say that they were mechalel shabbos as when one’s life is in danger there is no such a thing as shabbos or yom tov according to the torah. pictures on the other hand is not a necessaty in my opinio that would warrant breaking shabbos for.
maybe one of the shomrim members or leaders can tell us what is and what isn’t allowed on shabbos or yom tov.

    TO PICTURE PLEASE:
if you read in the article it said this happened on shabboss…

  • Cher

this is happening less then two months after there was a robbery in that building

  • Pro-Photo

As far as the incident happening on Shabbos, there is no reason a Shomrim member could not ask one of the police officers to take a photo, as we generally aren’t opposed to asking for a little Shabbos help when needed.

I believe that occasions like this, sometimes exceptions have to be made. I am a woman who lives at the end of Kingston. While my building is certainly secure, with two security doors that remain locked at all times, I have to walk down by the Shuk to get home, and that area is a little rough at times.

I think that taking photos of the people that are committing the crimes and making sure they get distributed would help tremendously! Then we can be on alert, and be a little more prepared.

    Just my two cents.

You can get a snap shot of the guy in the police station.
I’m sure they have his picture.

  • Beyond BUILDING MANAGER

    B“H
Beyond what ”BUILDING MANAGER” said, we do have a vulnerability on Shabbos, even when there is a lock on the outside door of the building.
This possible danger is that we sometimes try to make it easier for our guests to come and go, by doing things to compromise that lock, i.e., unlocking it, or placing objects between the door and the frame, to leave it open a little bit without locking.
THIS HAS TO STOP. A little inconvenience (making the guests knock longer and louder to be heard sometimes, getting up after falling asleep on Shabbos night to let the guests in, or better yet, giving the guests a serious curfew time) is better than being unsafe.

  • in response to another resident

OBVIOUSLY, I didn’t mean did the shomrim take a picture of him on Shsbbos. Since he is a convict, the police dept have pictures of him (mug shots,e tc), so that is what I was referring to.

And yes, pictures are very necessary, some of the most dangerous criminals have been caught from regular people recognizing them.

  • picture

Duh, we all know you can’t take a picture on Shabbos. But there’s gotta be a way you can get a picture from the police. They should have it on file. Can’t you put it up on CrownHeights.info for all of us to see?

  • baltimore resident

ok but we can still have a pic from him since they found his card
