World’s First Chanukah Event Takes Place in Melbourne

What was likely the first Chanukah event this year took place in Melbourne, Australia, when Chabad of Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD) hosted their annual Menorah Lighting and Cocktail Party at Parliament House.

Attending and addressing the event were some of the most well known rabbis and politicians in Melbourne.

Mr. Graham Smorgan acted as Master of Ceremonies. Following him was the newly elected Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews, followed by Rabbi Chaim Herzog, director of Chabad of Melbourne CBD – who lit the Menorah together with Mr. Smorgan. After the lighting, the Central Shule’s Choir sang ‘Haneiros Halalu.’

Rabbi Genede, the Spiritual Leader of Caulfield Hebrew congregation, addressed the gathering, followed by Rabbi Joseph Gutnick, Spiritual Leader of Caulfield Chabad House.

Leader of the Opposition Matthew Guy addressed the gathering as well, followed by a performance by the Chazzan Dov Farkas.

The event concluded with a Chanukah cocktail party, which was enjoyed by the large crowd in attendance.
