Rabbi Edan Hanouka Brings the Warmth and Wisdom of Chassidic Storytelling to a New Generation

There are lessons we learn from books, and then there are lessons we absorb through stories.

Many of us remember sitting in a classroom or around a Shabbos table, captivated by a teacher or parent sharing a story that stayed with us long after the final words were spoken. For Rabbi Hanouka, this is something he experienced firsthand. He still remembers sitting in front of his first-grade teacher, listening attentively and being completely captivated by the stories being shared. Stories have always held a special place in Jewish life, carrying history, inspiration, values, faith, and connection from one generation to the next.

From Humble Beginnings to a Growing Program

The project began very simply, with Rabbi Hanouka recording Divrei Torah directly on his iPhone and sharing them in a WhatsApp group. As the group grew, he decided to shift toward recording stories, recognizing the unique power stories have to reach people, inspire them, and leave a lasting impression.

A friend encouraged Rabbi Hanouka to “up his game” and sent him professional recording equipment with a note that said something along the lines of, “Sometimes it’s hard to listen to your own voice.” That gift allowed Edan to hear his recordings properly and begin editing them.

Other friends encouraged him to “make a giveaway and create a website.” As the editing became more time-consuming, he hired an editor.

With his friends’ advice, support, and encouragement, this small project has continued to grow. Due to the program’s continued expansion, Rabbi Hanouka recently hired someone to help with researching the stories and uncovering the rich details behind them.

Having served as an educator in both Australia and the United States, Rabbi Hanouka has spent years connecting with students and communities through teaching and meaningful relationships. Alongside his passion for education has always been another calling: sharing stories.

That passion gave birth to “Chassidic Stories With Edan,” a podcast featuring a mix of well-known Chassidic stories alongside lesser-known, fascinating stories that deserve to be heard.

The inspiration behind the podcast also comes from a teaching in Hayom Yom of the 26th of Av, which teaches that every story contains a lesson for life. Guided by this idea, Rabbi Hanouka carefully selects and records stories that do more than entertain — they encourage growth in Yiras Shamayim, strengthen Bitachon, deepen Emunah in Hashem, and inspire positive change.

An Encouraging Message

After releasing a story about a poor man who discreetly distributed his funds to others, he received this message from one of the listeners:

“How lovely. It’s inspiring me to give more — hard for me as it’s been very difficult to find employment, so my fist is holding tightly to my money. But I will figure it out.

Thanks for this and other stories.”

Messages like this remind Rabbi Hanouka that these stories can have an impact far beyond simply being something to listen to. Knowing that a story inspired someone to think differently and even consider giving more, despite their own challenges, was incredibly meaningful to him.

Stories for Every Generation

One of the unique features of “Chassidic Stories With Edan” is that the stories are presented with both children and adults in mind. Rabbi Hanouka carefully considers the language and themes of each story, creating a balance that allows children to listen and learn, while adults can also find depth, meaning, and inspiration in them.

With the use of clear, positive, and appropriate language, the goal of creating stories that families can listen to together is achieved, all while respecting every listener.

The stories are thoughtfully chosen for their ability to encourage and inspire. They highlight themes such as Emunah, Chesed, Bitachon, and trust in Tzadikim.

The Sefer Hayom Yom (26th Menachem A) teaches that “every story contains within it a life lesson”. A story can capture a person’s heart. It can plant an idea, awaken a feeling, inspire positive change, and even help someone choose a better path for themselves.

A child may hear a story today and remember its lesson years later. An adult may hear the same story at exactly the moment they need encouragement. That is the power of storytelling and the impact Rabbi Hanouka hopes to create through every episode.
