Massive Fire Causes Extensive Damage at the Alter Rebbe’s Ohel in Haditch
A massive fire broke out Friday night at the Ohel complex of the Alter Rebbe, causing millions in damages to one of the Chabad world’s most significant historic sites.
The blaze swept through the main building of the “Rabbeinu Hagadol” complex in Haditch, Ukraine, destroying the Shul and severely damaging the kitchen and hospitality facilities that serve the thousands of visitors who travel to the site each year.
According to initial reports, the fire began shortly before midnight and spread rapidly throughout the structure. The main building sustained catastrophic damage, with losses estimated to be in the millions of dollars.
Boruch Hashem, no injuries were reported.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. Early indications suggest it may have been the result of an electrical short circuit, though officials are examining all possible causes.
The Ohel of the Alter Rebbe in Haditch is among the holiest destinations for Chabad Chassidim. Throughout the year—and especially on the Alter Rebbe’s yahrtzeit on Chof-Daled Teves—thousands of visitors from around the world travel to the site to daven and spend time at the resting place of the founder of Chabad Chassidus.
The Haditch complex, which includes a Shul and accommodations for guests, has served as a central hub for the many Chassidim visiting the historic site.
