New Chabad Center To Schaumburg, Illinois

With an estimated 600 Jewish families and no dedicated Jewish infrastructure, Schaumburg has long been an untapped community — until now. A northwestern suburb of Chicago, Schaumburg is known for its quiet neighborhoods and thriving business district.

Five months ago, Rabbi Mendel and Miriam Greenberg moved in to establish Chabad’s first presence in the area. Their early months have been spent knocking on doors, meeting residents, and mapping out the Jewish life already here. From older families who have lived in the area since the 1970s to young professionals drawn by Chicago’s suburban growth, the couple has begun connecting with locals one household at a time.

Despite being new, they’ve already hosted some events. “We held a Shofar in the Park program on Rosh Hashanah and a few Sukkot gatherings,” said Rabbi Greenberg. “We didn’t expect to meet so many people.”

As they continue their outreach, the Greenbergs say the work is just beginning. “We’re taking it step by step,” Rabbi Greenberg said. “There’s a lot of potential here for Jewish growth, and we’re starting to see it take shape.”
