GAITHERSBURG, MD [CHI] — Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum became the first Chasidic Rabbi to be commissioned into the Maryland Defense Force last night in a ceremony that took place at Chabad of Upper Montgomery County in Gaithersburg.

GAITHERSBURG, MD [CHI] — Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum became the first Chasidic Rabbi to be commissioned into the Maryland Defense Force last night in a ceremony that took place at Chabad of Upper Montgomery County in Gaithersburg.

Rabbi Tenenbaum had to get a special exemption to be able to keep his beard, which was approved by Brigadier General Courtney B. Wilson of the Maryland Defense Force. Following the commissioning, Rabbi Tenenbaum will be attached to support the 175th Training Regiment of the Maryland Army National Guard.

    This should open the floodgates and be used as a precedent by many Anash and Shluchim unable to be previously enlisted as chaplains because of beard "restrictions".
