The First Bell Rings with Hope: A New School Year Begins in FJC’s Jewish Educational Institutions Across Ukraine
Thousands of young learners filed into the Federation of Jewish Communities (FJC) Or Avner network of Jewish preschools, schools, high schools across Ukraine, the traditional First Bell ceremonies took place with both excitement and concern in the air.
In many cities, the resonant “First Bell” soundtrack was suddenly interrupted by alarm sirens mid‑ceremony. Heartbeats quickened. Yet, the students, teachers, and families remained rooted in the moment despite hurrying to the shelters.
One educator reflected, “Educational institutions are the anchor of Jewish continuity. The situation here is unbearable—but we will do everything for our students’ education.”
Only a few days ago, Kyiv endured a harrowing nighttime missile assault. “For hours, explosions roared,” an eyewitness recounted. “Rockets, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles—an entire arsenal rained down. It was not a night for sleep.” The attack inflicted devastation near homes, yet by grace, no casualties were reported in nearby Avner communities.
In anticipation of such dangers, staff across all FJC’s Or Avner institutions had promptly refreshed safety protocols—alerting teaching teams, students, and families to follow secure procedures should an attack occur during school hours.
Despite the challenges, the ceremonies retained their familiar warmth. Echoing beloved tradition, the blasts of the shofar were heard—as customary during the month of Elul and towards the approach of Rosh Hashana.
In addition to the formal institutions, FJC’s informal educational programs—including the JFuture Sunday school and SmartJ afternoon school, the EnerJew Jewish youth movement, and other initiatives—are also soon under way, ready to nurture students outside the formal schedule.
FJC’s Ohr Avner Jewish educational network, along with its informal programs, is generously supported by JRNU, which helps provide vital resources such as enhanced security measures, school backpacks, assistance for students from needy families, transportation, nutritious hot meals, and psychological support.
