Crown Heights EMT Couple Saves a Life Together

A quick thinking Crown Heights Jewish couple, who were in the right place at the right time, may be responsible for saving the life of a woman injured in a hit and run accident in Park Slope.

From VIN News by Sandy Eller:

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Union Street and 4th Avenue when an unidentified woman who was crossing 4th Avenue was struck by a car that ran a red light and barreled into the intersection.

“A car came flying down 4th Avenue and attempted to brake for the red light,” eyewitness Levi Liberow, told VIN News. “He couldn’t stop so he accelerated again into the intersection. He hit this woman, she flew up in the air like a plastic bag, flying a good 15 to 20 feet in the air, doing tumble sauces. She hit her skull against the windshield and then landed headfirst on the pavement.

Liberow and his wife, both of whom are volunteer EMTs, were in their car and had just entered the intersection on Union Street.  As the driver sped away from the scene, Liberow, a wedding photographer and father of seven, contemplated chasing after the driver.

“There are enough traffic cameras in the area to catch him,” said Liberow. The more important thing was to see what we could do to save her life.”

Liberow and his wife Fraydie ran to assist the victim.

“I was sure she was dead but she had a pulse,” said Liberow.  “We didn’t really know where to start, there was blood everywhere, coming from her head, her mouth, and her ears.  We tried to maintain basic life support but this really was not a call for us. We called the paramedics and we stabilized her as much as we were able to to prevent spinal damage.”

Paramedics transported the woman to Lutheran Hospital.  According to reports on DNA Info, the 46 year old woman was hospitalized in critical condition.  Police are still searching for the driver of the car and are investigating reports that the Hyundai Elantra, with license plate number GRM8448, had been stolen.

Liberow was grateful to have had an opportunity to assist someone in need of urgent medical care.

“There were so many people there, the cops, the witnesses, the bystanders, and they were amazed that someone could help her and even more so, to see two Jewish people who were able to help,” said Liberow.

  • No Care?

So they did C-spine? And that’s considered saving her life? I think the Paramedics that showed up have something more to do with it.
