Photos: 770 Gets a Facelift

The interior of the main building of 770 has been buzzing with activity over the past several days, as it undergoes its first serious facelift since 1978.

The work is being led by R. Gershon Laufer under the guidance of Rabbi Chaim Boruch Halberstam, who was personally appointed by the Rebbe to the Vaad Bedek Habayis.

The work is moving along at a fast and steady pace, and is expected to be complete in time for the Yomtov of Shavuos, G-d wiling, Gershon Laufer told CrownHeights.info.

The much needed work includes the refinishing of all the hallway doors and the installment of new molding – made to match the original molding of the building, which was purchased by the Frierdiker Rebbe in 1940 not long after it was built.

If you would like to take part in this important project, please contact R. Gershon Laufer at 917-627-7570.

Changing the objects the rebbe touched????!!!!!
    Frightening!
All we have left is the original holy building! To replace that???!!!

It is time for a facelift but what happened to the original doors the Rebbe used? Couldn’t they just have been painted onstead of being replaced?
To the Rebbe the phyical building and walls of 770 were precious…

When I saw this article I had mixed feelings.
On one hand its good to see that 770 is being taken care of, and that someone is there to watch it.
But on the other hand I am not so sure that this is the way it should be done, I come to 770 at least once a day because this is the place that I feel connected to the rebbe this is the floor the rebbe walked on these are the doors the rebbe walked through, if its all gone what will I tell myself, and what will I tell my children.
But most of all the ‘kedosha’ that these doors, walls have are NOT replaceable.
I love the rebbe and I want to continue filling him in this holy place.

This is a Chossid? One who cannot feel the Rebbe because of a floor or door? HA!

The floors in 770 are so far removed from the original which the Rebbe walked on… The walls? Those are panel coverings which were installed a few years ago…

You need to feel mekushar? Go learn a maamar or do mivtzoim. Maybe go to the Ohel and write a pan (or the Igros if thats your thing), but spare me your lunacy over a door or a floor tile. Du ligt zach in drek.

Great job I think the rebbe house should be next at least the outside

    • Doors

I see you are sooooooo worried about the doors…. So I will tell you.

The hallway door was smashed open so many times that it was only glue that was holding it together, so an exact copy of it was made and it was replaced. The original was placed on another door frame in upstairs 770.

The other door which was replaced was the hallway door entering the ‘big zal’. It used to be metal and it was replaced with a wood one, which is an exact copy of the hallway door and the Rebbes rooms door. The original metal door was reused in another door frame as well.

  • hate to bust a bubble

btw this happened like 6 months ago (notice the wool hat)

This is a project that was ongoing. It began in the winter and yesterday they were ‘staining’ and ‘lacquering; the finished doors, frames and moldings.
