L’man Achai’s Jewish Hero Cards
In Camp L’man Achai, one can find all of the regular, more traditional programs and activities that make camp the amazing experience that it is, and so much more. But in L’man Achai, the underlying aim and goal of every initiative is to help instill and foster a deep connection and love for Torah and Mitzvos in the heart of every camper.
In that vein, this summer, L’man Achai created a set of Jewish Hero Cards. This set, made up of fifty-four primary cards, is intended for the children to collect throughout the summer. The cards, compiled by Mendel Raskin and beautifully designed by Sruly Lipszyc (of SrulyDesign.com), goes through important and prominent Jewish leaders throughout the ages. Each card has on one side, the name of a Jewish Hero, with a picture of either the Hero himself, or a picture depicting an event or item that is tied to that Jewish Hero. If you’ll turn over the card, you’ll find a short synopsis of that leader’s life with important information about him. The children can also earn their own albums into which they can place their growing card collections.
Boruch Hashem, right from the start, it became an unbelievable success. The children took to it like they do to pretty much any competitive game or contest. But this time, what they were going for was the card of R’ Shimon Bar Yochai, for instance, or the Rambam card. Now, you can hear the campers excitedly telling their friends: “I just got the Rebbe card”, or, “I have the card of the Baal Shem Tov”. The children were also able to study and get tested on the information about the leaders written on the cards, in L’man Achai’s Torah by Heart program.
One of the many great things that resulted from this initiative is that now the children are all fluent with, at the very least, the names and some basic information about so many of the Jewish People’s Heroes, Tzadikim who lit up the world for generations.
