‘Stolen Car’ Involved in Crash, Driver Flees

A number of people are lucky to be alive after a collision between an SUV and a sedan occurred in a busy Empire Boulevard intersection. The sedan lost control and slammed into a building – just missing a number of pedestrians that were waiting in a bus stop. The driver of the sedan fled the scene.

The crash occurred at around 6:30pm in the intersection of Empire Boulevard and Troy Avenue. Dashboard camera footage reveal that the SUV was traveling down Empire and was crossing the intersection on a green light, when a black Lexus LS460 ran a red light coming up Troy and the vehicles collided.

The driver of Lexus lost control, swerved and crashed into an apartment building, narrowly missing a group of people standing and waiting in a bus stop. The driver, described as a heavyset black man, got out of the car and fled on foot down Montgomery Street.

911 and Hatzalah were called and dozens of emergency rescue personal responded to the scene, though police officers took nearly 45 minutes to respond.

In the meantime one witness followed the fleeing driver and saw him enter 676 Montgomery Street. The witness then returned to the scene and when police finally arrived he shared that information with them.

Meanwhile, a Jewish man arrived at the scene saying that he is the owner of Lexus car and that it had just been stolen a few minutes earlier from a mechanic shop on Troy Avenue just a few blocks away.

Police officers noted a strong smell of marijuana in the vehicle and were skeptical of the owner’s account that the car was just stolen.
