Retired NYPD Chief Chuck Scholl, a staunch supporter of the Jewish communities of New York City who was active in assisting the Crown Heights community, passed away this morning at the age of 64.

“Chief Scholl was a true friend of Crown Heights Shomrim and the entire Shomrim family,” Crown Heights Shomrim Coordinator Gadi Hershkop said. “He was always there when the community needed him.”

Scholl grew up in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Caroll Gardens, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Police Science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York. Upon his graduation, he was the recipient of the Police Foundation Scholarship Award, awarded to the member of the NYPD with the highest GPA.

He began his career in 1979 as a patrolman in Bedford–Stuyvesant. One year later, he began working in Williamsburg, “and that’s when my friendship with the Orthodox community began – and those friendships have continued to this day,” Scholl said. “I learned a lot from leaders like Rabbi Edgar Gluck and Rabbi Berish Frelich, and also in my dealings with the Shomrim patrols – I have seen how they can help the NYPD.”

In 2021, after 41 years on the force, Scholl retired as the Executive Officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South.

During his years as a chief, he received multiple awards from Crown Heights Shomrim and spoke at a Shomrim award dinner in March of 2016.

At the dinner, Scholl spoke about his first interaction with Shomrim of Williamsburg in 1979. “They made more collars then I did,” he quipped, adding that “the spread of Shomrim to neighboring communities is a tribute to the good work of Shomrim.”

“Throughout his tenure in the NYPD Chief Scholl has been an amazing asset to the Crown Heights community at large, and to Shomrim specifically in our mission to keep our neighborhood safe,” Crown Heights Coordinator Rabbi Mendy Hershkop said. “He was always responsive to requests that were sensitive to our community.”
He was the epitome of community policing and was a living display of courtesy, professionalism, and respect. Crown heights Shomrim mourn his passing.

“Devastated to learn of the passing of my friend Chuck Scholl, former Deputy Chief in the NYPD, Chaim Deautsch posted in a message about his passing. “To know him was to love him – Chief Scholl was the life of every party. He had the biggest heart, and always knew how to make everyone feel cared about.”
