Yes.If my son can volunteer and defend the Eretz Yisroel with no financial benefit than everyone should do their part even public service. I have been to Israel many times and seen men strolling around Meir Sherim and Bnei Bram during the day. Are they learning 24/7? Let them give back to the country that protects them and support them.

The last lady on the video made the most sense. Your opinion from out side of Israel has no validity. Is serving the army commendable – yes, especially when they train you to kick out Jews from their homes, is serving the army beneficial for future work/jobs in Israel – yes, especially when you see Baal Tshivas who have served in the elite forces and get turned away at job interviews just because the interviewer saw the Haredi garb.

#3, How old are the people you see strolling around? Do you expect them to stay on 24/7 learning for the rest of their lives? Why? Soldiers only serve three years, and then they’re free to get jobs. Bnei Torah are not allowed to leave the kollel and take jobs, even when they’re 30 or more, and that’s unfair. Once someone has served three years (or five if you like) of full time learning, and they’re married and have families to worry about, they should be considered to have done their part just like a soldier, and should be allowed to leave if they feel they have to.

The real answer is that nobody should be forced to serve. Conscription is completely unnecessary, and only causes hatred. The truth is that the IDF already has too many people and not enough for them to do, so they treat them as slave labor. They should abolish conscription altogether, and pay people a decent wage, and they would get more than enough volunteers.

  • The medine is oichet tiff in golus.

The last lady on the video made the most sense. Your opinion from out side of Israel has no validity.

Correct. I have no shaychus to the medine except that I care about the physical and spiritual survival of the Jews living there.

I do not know whether there is a need for more soldiers or not. The Defense Ministry should know that, and it is not sure either or there would be a firm decision – instead, this is just internal politics as well in that mismanaged entity where every pushtak thinks he is a prime minister.

It is not my business who serves and who doesn’t any more than it is my business what the VAT rate is over there or whether there is a deposit on soda bottles there.

The medine is a free country, and if the law changes or if people don’t like the law, they themselves can vote as they wish. Those who really don’t like it one way or the other can emigrate, as many do anyway before or after army service.

We who live outside of the medine don’t have a vote and its laws are not our laws. Even when we visit, we hardly pay taxes to maintain it between hotel exemptions and the tax refund counter at the airport.
