Y-Love: If Napoleon’s March Can Become Chabad Niggun, There is Room for Hip-Hop Too

  • curious

is he a Rebbe that can take things from klipah and transform it to kedusha? just wondering.

  • I love this man! but he-s unfortunately

pls dont compare apples to oranges!

to suggest that any yid has the ability to elevate things out of the domain of “klipa” into kedusha, as can a Rebbeh! is simply misguided arrogance!

there is a huge difference between the powers and judgement of a Rebbeh (a spiritual giant) and a average good jew!

nothing personal! im sure for those who otherwise listen to Worse music, any step up is good for them!

    people should only step up!

only a Rebbeh can elevate KLIPA such as Napolion etc

  • be careful

from the standpoint of chabad that statement doesnt hold true. as we know the only one who has the koiach to change the klippah of a goyishe niggun to kedushah is the nossi hador. the alter rebbe and down to our Rebbe. no one else has that ability. while i don’t say hip hop is klippah or kedusha be careful what kind of bold statements you make before verifying them with your mashpia. your music may be dear to you, but it isnt for everyone. you should change the heading of the post as it is incorrect and misleading.

  • as long as

as long as it is not for yoshka like in
Erran Baron Cohen – “Dreidel” (feat. Jules Brookes & Y-Love)

  • Chaim Yankel

I didn’t watch the video; but from the headline, it sounds like he is Shtickle Ferd, un Oks Oichet!

  • sam

um its great that tshuks are coming to chabad and all, after all, we attract the weirdest range of people. but what the hell is with ppl who learned one line tanya and decided that they know how to eleavate klipeh. its weird. stop convincing urself songs liek this and the other “chabad” reggae hip-hop is ok for lubavitch, just be honest w urselves and know that its goyshe and please dont make it into something its not. call it what it is. genug shoin

  • Dont mix your desires with holy things

Your really messed up if thats what you think your doing. You think your so holy to do that, dont fool yourself. You like that style music, fine. Dont pretend your doing the world a favor

  • Mottel

For those asking about using non-Jewish tunes and the appropriateness of comparing a Rebbe’s elevation of a song to that of “stam” a yid . . .
Ask then about Russian Chasidim (not Rebbes) who used Communist party songs (Der Rebbe Zal gezunt Zayn, Mi Armiya Adumra, etc.) or the many non-Jewish tunes used by MBD and others . . . Standard “Frum” pop music is as Jewish in origin as Sushi at a Kiddush.

  • WHAT?

I LOVE matisyahu and Im not fanatic but to compare the rebbes adapttion of napoleans march!
    CHUTZPA!
hwere do these people come from

  • Jeff

If JLI can have a speaker discus spitzer and Clinton … Then y love can have an opinion on klipah.

  • A normal Person who has brains

a chutzpah Gedoilah to even write this on the website for a joke your playing around with fire where is your feeling 4 holy things im totaly shoked

  • Leave the guy alone!

Boy did a whole lot of people miss the point. He is probably not aware of the concept of a Rebbe transforming klipah, and I don’t think he meant to be chutzpadik. I think his point was more that you can find good in something and then make it accessible in a clean way to people who would otherwise do the wrong thing. He was honest with his story. He is not a thug or gangster and if he is inspiring our supremely underinsipred youth then good for him. How many people have you convinced to stay in seminary through your music? Rap got him through Gemara, maybe instead of dissing him we should take a lesson in differentiated learning styles. Basically people don’t knock it till you tried!

  • Please lemme hear what everyone else thi

why is everyone hatin’ on this dude? doesn’t it say in the torah you shouldn’t hate on a convert? ESPECIALLY a convert? I don’t know, that’s just me.
And he has a good point. There is no such thing as “jewish music”. There is music written by jews in the style of their countries. Have you noticed a difference between israeli jewish music and russian jewish music? it sounds different because it has nothing to do with the “jewish”, that has to do with the soul of the writer not the style of the music. If you listen to any russian composer (Rachmaninoff’s Concerto 2, 3rd movement, famous theme) that will sound VERY similar to a niggun. If you listen to avrohom fried, and then you listen to a 70’s or 80’s romance music, it will sound just about identical except for the words.
So what do we see? Hip hop could be made into kedusha because it is from a neutral place. Please send me comments, i really want to hear what everyone thinks. This is nothing to do with a rebbe making a inherintly non jewish song in to kedusha. It’s about putting your YIDDISHE NESHOMO into a neutral song style. the same way a chossid put his yiddishe neshomo into a russian or polish styled song.

  • Sick

You people make me sick! Firstly, how can you say things like that about gair tzedek! Secondly, being immature and morons that you are, he mentioned Chabad using other types of music for negunim, but his music is not taken from other sources, it is his own! So what are you going on about his rebbe powers blah blah blah!!

  • Just me

    I wonder…
I think he’s really great, teaching people hilchos succos in his songs.
Personally I just don’t like the sound of rap, but I could see him doing good shlichus with his work.
My question is: is he legitimately Jewish, because I heard him mention a rav in Flatbush. Does that mean he was modern-orthodoxly converted?

  • y-love supporter

YLOVEU ROCK DUDE UR MUSIC IS MY SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE LOL JK BUT ITS REALLY AWESOME
DONT LISTEN TO THE NAYSAYERS TELL THEM NICELY BUT FIRMLY TO GO FLY A KITE!!!!

    btw shmuli is disgusting

  • Mottel

    To Number 22:

The real question is, as an anonymous quoter, how do we know that YOU are Jewish?

  • AA

#22, Modern Orthodox are shomrei Torah umitzvos, so there is no reason to question whether their converts are “legitimately Jewish,” any more than you would from a beis din of “shpitz Chabad.”

  • to the comments above

Be careful with your words and be careful with the way you treat a ger tzeddak. This is not about the music. This is not something to take lightly & Hashem who knows whats in the heart of every person does not take it lightly either.

  • knew him forever

Y Love is an properly converted Jew with the brains of a fly. Listen to better music and ignore him. nothing to gain and waste of your time.

  • AA

#29 (also several other posters), consider well what commenter #20 said. Perhaps indeed Y-Love, by using such tunes, is in violation of the mitzvah “uvechukoseihem lo seileichu” – not to imitate non-Jewish styles. But you, by calling him names, are in violation of 36 or 46 mitzvos about not hurting a convert’s feelings (see Bava Metzia 59a)! So which is worse?

  • Don-t only study the Torah but apply it!

“No word is lost, for all is recorded. Angels are sent to every person to note each and every word, and they never part from him. ‘For the bird of the sky transmits the voice and the accompanying angel testifies.’ (Koheles 1:20)..Excerpt from a letter by the Vilna Gaon
To all the negative comments:Go study some Chofetz Haim I dare say you need it big time. And you wonder why Masiach is not here yet.WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!

  • 29 is correct

Y-Love is a publicity stunt and not a very successful one at that. He belittles real Judaism, rants about Jews being racist, and hangs out with all kinds of fringe elements in the community and outside it. I think he became a ger because he had no career in the general music world. His talent is nonexistent, but he could be a problem as an influence on confused teens.

There is a photo of him at a gathering of off the derech kids acting just as they do and doing something that would call his gerus into question. The picture is old and he may have grown since then, but I would not let him near any non-mevushal wine.

  • Racism

Sorry to break it you number 32 but being a convert is not easy and there is a lot of racism it is unfortunate but true, what can you do?

  • 29 is correct

Yes, but when someone converts and immediately joins a band of off the derech young people, something is very wrong. He may even be an out and out anti-Semite who is out to undermine us from within. I know of two anti-Semites who davka married and divorced Jewish women; anti-Semitism is a disease and it takes strange forms sometimes.

If anything, I feel bad for the many sincere gerim “of color” who risk being lumped in with this character.

  • Mottel

To number 34: Be careful, I think your tinfoil hat may be slipping off. If you don’t tighten it quickly, the anti-semitic deathrays may seep into your brain!

Honestly, you should be embarrassed of both your own stupidity and your hate.

  • 29 is correct

Mottel, it is your political correctness that needs to be shielded with a tinfoil hat. I was not born yesterday. I know of what I speak.

I’ve heard the guy sound off before, and as I said, I would not let him get near non-mevushal wine.

  • Mottel

To number 29 (an anonymous coward like all the others): I speak not from political correctness, but from actually knowing the guy. (In any event my comment was about 34’s conspiracy theory lunacy.)

That being said, on what basis are you making statements about wine? Are you questioning his shmiras shabbos? laughable. Are you making claims about the giur itself? That only shows your am haaratzus when it comes to the halachos of giur.
Get a life. I feel very sorry for indolent dolts that spew their hate here.

  • be nice

looks like his parents are unfortunately right based on all your comments. “they will never accept you.” Comments are really sad!

  • OWCH.

why cant everyone just be nice? yes the title is 100% wrong. i havent personally seen…but comments have said that Y love has been doing things which arent right. true or false, you cant judge him. you can judge the music, you can even say if what he did was right or wrong if u push it…but calling people names for no reason…ich main..wheres our ahavas yisroel?! and that goes for all of us. THE WAY TO BRING MOSHIACH IS THRU AHAVAS YISROEL. STOP JUDGING. just love. and if u dont trust him..no prob with that, dont let ur kids listen to his music..but accept him as a creation of Gd. jew or not.
